Checking actual FireWire speed...?

I have an external IEEE 1394 - IDE drive box with an 80GB hard drive in it for backups. I noticed that the maximum speed it ever reaches is 100Mb (12.5 MB/s). Doesn't 1394 support 100, 200, and 400Mbps? How can I check to see which speed the 1394 bus is actually running at? And if there is such a method and it confirms the 100Mbps mode, how can I get it up to 400?

I know that my ti book will usually run 16-24 Mb/s and the new ibooks run at a sustained 31-32 MB/s, but on a pc i really don't know.
