I just ran out of checks and was at staples and saw a print your own check software with paper for $10 so i picked it up, seems to work ok...just kinda worried about writing my first check using it...i have all the info on it but just worried about how easy it was

does the check number matter? i just started at a number higher then i know any of my other checks have been...or does it have to be right after one of the old checks

Check number doesn't matter.

What DOES matter is if your bank requires MICR encoding at the bottom of the check. If you print them yourself, the funny numbers at the bottom of the check will not have the magnetic properties that many banks require. Their machine won't read it and it will get kicked out to be processed manually.

That does happen every once in a while even with regularly printed checks, but if your bank requires MICR and they see that none of your checks are making it through the machine processing, they'll probably tell you to knock it off.

Or you could buy a MICR toner cartridge for your laser printer...

Probably not a good solution unless you're printing checks regularly (payroll typically), but you can certainly do it.

A cartridge for my 4+, for example, is $185.
