True, just make sure the video tape is rolling.

video tape?

Like they had with Rodney King.

Maybe see if you can get the news stations to roll only five seconds of it, too. :p

Then take out your glass eye and smash it on the ground.

lol :D

I'm sure the old lady was a threat to the lives of the two police officers. If the officers are unable to defend against a 71 old lady, they should stay somewhere protected from any kind of harm (like a jail for several weeks at least). Just thinking of what would have been happened to me if I would do something like this...

If that old disease ridden hag tried to bite me, I would taser her ass too! She's lucky she didn't get the ole night stick to the dentures.

From the story, it sounds like she got what she deserved. If she cannot follow the instructions of uniformed officers, she needs to be somewhere that people can take care of her.

Animals can't follow instructions either, shall we torture them too? For whatever reason, possibly hardness of hearing or senility, possibly simple crabbiness, she didn't. Either way, they had no reason to use the kind of force they did. Police are given many liberties concerning the law, and it stands to reason that, like undisciplined children, many will abuse this.

Attacking a police officer should not be punished, they should have let her go back inside. Hell, she should be allowed to shoot back at them, after all, she is a poor innocent, old lady...

Discipline (the legal kind) without beating the snot out of her would have been quite easy, how much of a fight can an elderly woman put up against men in their prime? Seriously...

She bit them, and they used appropriate force to subdue her without severe injury.

Neither pepper spray or a tazer is a lethal weapon (well a tazer could be in an untrained persons hands, but you get my point). They were obviously unable to control the situation without using force.

the job of a police officer is not to punish, so if you are arguing that their use of force is justified because she deserved to be punished, that is a flawed argument.

You have to remember, folks. The Oregonian is a VERY liberal paper. The Oregonian is notorious for pulling sh|t like not posting everyone's story just to make a certain party the evil party. If you believe everything you read in the Oregonian, you're a fool.

Although you seem to purvey a sense of neutrality, it is quite obvious that you are siding with the police.

It is indeed true that all the facts are not present, but for the sake of argument, you must state your opinion or desist in posting in this thread. As I said, you seem to be swaying towards siding with the cops.

I must admit, being a police officer is definitely an honorable and just as easily a life-threatening position, but does not excuse this type of behavior. If you cannot differentiate between a "punck as bitch gangbanger" and a seemingly uncooperative elderly women and compensate accordingly , you should not, by any stretch of the imagination, continue being a police officer.

Assuming these cops were of at least modest build , there are many ways that they could have approached this, as was quoted, "differently."

They not only scared and possibly hurt an elderly women out of a lack of professionalism, but also discredited the fine police officers that portland might have.

Do not defend for the sake of defending.

Like I said before, after listening to the comments her lawyer made I'm tempted to say the whole thing was BS. It reeks of Rodney King. I'm not defending these police officers beyond what my conscience deems necessary. If they're indeed guilty of acting inappropriately then they should be punished, tried of a crime and/or fired.

I'm not yet convinced that they acted inappropriately. I still don't know how large the woman is, nor how bad her hearing really is, nor how hard she BIT one of the officers. Etc etc. Until that point I'm giving these men the benefit of the doubt, as it is their reputation and their careers on the line.

I'm not a police officer, nor do I have any intention of becoming one.

That's my opinion.

giving the benefit of doubt to the officers is not any more justified than believing in the old lady and witnesses

The cops arent even defending themselves well.... what can an old lady do to hurt them? Bite them? OH NO!! not a bite!. Yes it can hurt, but there is no way the old hag could have gotten her dentures on them unless they were touching her. If they had just stood back and tried to explain everything to her it might have gone smoother. Laying the smackdown on an old /hard of hearing / blind lady is just not very smart....

they didnt get fired... for doing that..... unless she had a knife, or was swinging wildly at the air blind as a bat, then Im not sure what the point of beating the hell out of her was....

Yes, because little old ladies certainly cannot in any way attack a police officer! It's just not physically possible! Little old ladies are bound to one spot on earth by the laws of physics!! HOW could she have attacked them!? IT'S NOT FREAKING POSSIBLE!!!!!

Their job is to ARREST the criminal. If she was resisting arrest, she deserved the force necessary to do so.

i've highlighted the part of your post that i was responding to; use of force to arrest a suspect is not equivalent to punishment, nor should it be. confusing these two concepts is pretty dangerous.

Incarceration is a form of punishment... whether anyone admits it or not.

I don't expect anything less from police officers. Sometimes their worst than the criminals. This is just one of those times.
