The question is will they hold up over the long run and will the company honor your warranty if something goes wrong? The real Nanos may have scratching issues, but I have a feeling that some of these imitation players might fall apart if you look at them funny, like those Chinese "Samsumg" knock-off cell phones.
I found a solution to the scratching issue after doing some in-depth research the other day. First, if you have already scratched your iPod, you can remove the scratches by using
Brasso with some elbow grease. Next, you'll need to spend $20 and get an
invisibleSHIELD. The invisibleSHIELD is basically heavy-duty Saran Wrap for your iPod. It changes the finish slightly, but prevents scratches from keys and coins in your pocket. There are a couple demo videos
here and another one
here. The general consensus from the (many) reviews I read were that this is a
must-have item for your iPod. After that, you'll probably need a case. The invisibleSHIELD is great for scratches, but if you drop your iPod, you're still hosed. If you keep it in your pocket, then the invisibleSHIELD should be enough, but if you're exercising or something, you'll want to get some sort of belt-clip or arm-strap. I ordered the 1gb black Nano for my wife, which is supposed to be one of the most scratch-prone iPods, as well as the invisibleSHIELD and a nice arm-strap for exercising. So, if you're willing to invest at least $20 in your $150+ iPod, you can easily prevent scratches from ever happening
