I stopped by Safeway today and the guy in front of me bought a single 20oz beer. Apparently they have some new ridiculous process for buying alcohol, I?m not sure why but thought you guys would get a kick out of it:

Cashier: Sir can I see your ID?
Customer: [hands over ID]
Cashier: Are you over the age of 21?
Customer: [confused look on face considering he just handed her his ID]?. Yes
Cashier: We have a new policy to check your ID that I have to go through this will just take a min. [pulls out a transparent sleeve and sticks his ID in it to help check for counterfeits, records his drivers license number on a clipboard she has and signs it]; since you were born in the 80?s I have to get my manager to verify this [calls manager on overhead]
Everyone: [waiting 2-3 min. for the manager to come up front]
Manager: Sir are you over the age of 21?
Customer: Yes
Manager: [also signs sheet on clipboard]
Cashier: [proceeds to ring up his purchase]

As much as I like to stand in line for 10 min. while waiting for the ?express lane? I think I?m going to make it a point to not buy beer at Safeway!

I'm in PDX, and I haven't heard of that happening. Of course, I rarely shop at Safeway anyway as it tends to be relatively expensive.

I usually dont shop at Safeway either but stopped today because it was on my way. This was the one @ the corner of MLK and Ainsworth in NE Portland...

WTH is PDX? Is it some new government-sponsored, testicle-tattooing program where you squeeze your nads between plexiglass plates (like a mammogram) and they tell your age?

Well? :Q

I think I'd rather see a single beer in the hands of a minor than a gun... but that's just me

you never know, for some people that may only tell you the number of days they've been alive since puberty... ;)

I think Safeway is THE most expensive place in town..

And then they offer you a clubcard and tell you how much you saved on each purchase.. LOL

At least you can buy beer in grocery stores. Pennsylvania is like Mormon Utah when it comes to alcohol sales.

He already said it was the one in the 'hood at MLK and NE Ainsworth.

I almost never shop at Safeway. The 2 in outer SW are both filthy and overpriced.

edit: damn, I'm slow today.

BTW, you can buy beer in grocery stores in Utah, it's just has to be 3.2% or less (same as in Colorado).

I think OLCC is on the warpath again. They are being forced into allowing liquor sales in grocery stores by this fall, but originally it will be just a test program in select stores. I think it can be safely assumed that only stores with perfect records will be selected, and it looks like Safeway might have its eyes on that prize. Just my guess...

"The 'hood" is a pretty appropreate description for that neighborhood too...
Calm down... just a joke, don't call the PC police. Remember that I was describing the location to a suburbanite from Clackamas, eh?

That's what I'm guessing. The same thing happened at Applebea's in NW Ohio. One restaurant got busted for serving underaged undercover officers, so you practically have to sign in blood to get a beer at any of them now.

I've had my ID checked 3 times for a single margarita.
