This will be primarly used for multiasking apps such as office, e-mail, photoshop, matlab, visual basic. Then movies and tv shows. I will probably play the occasional game but not often (1 hr a week max). I am considering overclocking, but only slightly. Chances are I'll be too lazy and leave everything at stock for a while.

I have a case already

Processor
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+2.0ghz
$405

Mobo
Maybe something ~20 cheaper? However, it needs to have good onboard sound cause i'm not getting a seperate sound card
Asus A8N-SLI Premium
$165

Video Card
MSI RX800PRO-TD256E Radeon X800 Pro
$200

Memory
CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) DDR-400
$87
Out of these:
link

Hard Drive
maybe seagate?
Maxtor Maxline III 250GB
$127

PSU
Antec Truepower EPS12V 550W
$115

Optical
BenQ DW1640
$46

Floppy
Samsung Black
$8

Total: ~$1100-1200

i might order everything off of zipzoomfly instead of newegg because it's free 2nd day shipping. anyone have any experience with that?

BTW, I think I know why prices are skyrocketing. Intel announced that it will stop making mobos supporting DDR. Dell uses Intel chipsets and mobos... No more buisiness from dell sends all the DDR prices up because everyone is speculating that DDR won't be worth it anymore.

I would get it all at mwave or if you want the OEM chip and get a better HSF I would get it at monarch....fvck newegg.....

oem at monarch is 369.00 dollars....if you plan to OC who needs the warranty and the stock cooler wont be enough....

I'm not planning on overclocking too much. I was going to get get it all from newegg so i can save on shipping but I'm looking at other places to order it from.

LOL that's the problem with Newegg. You get absolutely no discount on shipping for purchasing multiple items. It really, really sucks. But then again understandable because they have 3-4 warehouse and the items have to be shipped separately.

And ZZF is an A+ in pretty much everyone's book. I would get an Epox ultra board if I was you.

Mobo- MSI Neo-4 SLI

Video Card- MSI X800 Pro PCI-E

DDR prices are skyrocketing!

What's the difference between the MSI Neo-4 SLI and SLI-platinum edition?
edit: I checked out the reviews... the MSI Neo-4 seems to be pretty good, especially with audio. However, I'm sort of partial to Asus because I have a pentium 3 1ghz right now with an asus board and I've never had any problems with it so far. Also, do all of these mobo have NCQ support?

And is the vid card worth the extra $20? Given the choice, I would rather put more into the mobo than vid card if they're both at equal levels

Platinum seems to have more cables and something else. I don't think there is much difference. Also, the x800 Pro beats the 6600GT. It beats the 6800. I think you would rather spend on the neo-4 and then get the x800 Pro.

Another stupid "gamers are all that matters" comment...read the OPs main post fool and you will see this is not a gaming rig...therefore he does not need much more....the pci-e 6600GT will give him working pure video and that will work just fine for what he has listed...probably even a bit of overkill even then....

Gamers....there are other ppl in this world doing worthwhile stuff with their rigs...

Well he is listing overpriced 6600GTS and the 200 is only 30 bucks more. With the money he saved on his mobo, he could get the x800 Pro!

The video card outperforms the 6600GT fairly. When overclock, it squishes the 6600GT.
Very good set there.

That is fine but I know what NIck meant....I am just tired of the gamer only crowd....

Well ... you can save a few bucks by going with a slightly less expensive power supply. The one you selected is indeed a very nice PS.

If you really want to cut the price down a bit, you may also wish to consider Enermaxhttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103512 for $89 + $7 shipping (FYI, this is a dual 12V PS)

Other then that, You can also save a bit by going with a cheaper hard drive ... perhaps it would be worth your time going through hot deals and picking up a 200GB seagate for like $80 or so ... then, when you are out of space, pick up another one .. (if required)

I don't know too much about the performance of an X800Pro ... but Can't you get a Geforce 6800 for $160 or so these days, won't that offer similar performance, at a better price?

XClio 450W with dual +12V rails for ~$50 at Newegg is also a very nice PSU. Made from the same manufacturer that makes Sparkle, Fortron, Antec, and Zalman products.

The 6800 is only cheap in AGP versions. PCI-E versions are around 200 dollars, and they don't hav GDDR3 memory, which is important.

I was also thinking about picking up one of the MSI Neo4 Plat Ultra boards (non-SLI), but don't see anything on MSI's website that says they are X2 (dual core) compatible. Anyone know for sure?

Any Socket 939 motherboard is X2 compatable as long as you have the latest BIOS. The Neo4 Platinum board doesn't have onboard Soundblaster Live! though, but it does have RAID 5 support, which the SLI boards do not.

Right, but if its a new build and the newest bios isn't already loaded on the board, then a X2 won't be compliant correct?
