thats the sound of a high powered turbo charger, you hear the blowoff at the very end. probably running like 20+ lbs of boost. Most car turbos are like 7-10 lbs of boost and of course, that car is stripped to the bone making the motor sound loud!

the turbo is whistling
my GN does that
a turbo is a mini turbine in a way...

that's the turbo cutting in and out.
My toyota tercel does make similar noise when accelerating. Though not that loud.. and not that fast.. but it felt good to be in that car.. Ah..brings back F3 memories.

yeah..that whistling sound is due to the air rushing out of the wastegate (aka blow-off valve).

on a side note: the VR6 is a special V6..mainly because it has an angle of 15degrees which gives it some charactertics of straight-six engines such as smoothness and much less vibration. What this mean to us? Well if it has less vibration then less energy is wasted to movement which in turns results in a better efficiency.

that's sound you hear when he shifts is the tires
they are spining alittle when he shifts gears
it's not the turbo

Yea, that sound is his tires.
Hes chirping every gear.
He chirped 5th gear for christs sake!!
:D

my friends turbo RX7 makes the exact same noises. I find it very hard to not get whiplash when he shifts gear.

UT: I thought you knew all about turbos and stuff ;)

<< out of the wastegate (aka blow-off valve). >>

Not the same item at all! Completely different purposes.

The whistling sound you hear is the turbo charge working. The louder noise you hear when he shifts is the blow off valve. Not all turbo charged cars have a blow off valve, but they all should :)

Soy's primer on a BOV: You're cruising down the track at 20 psi of boost. You go to shift and let off the throttle. The throttle blade closes. You've now got 20 psi of boost in the intake with no where to go, the turbocharges blades get a nice harsh load on them from this backpressure in the intake. This is known as stacking. Not great on the turbo's bearings and it slows the blades down. If you had a blow off valve, when you let off the throttle this little valve in the intake path would open and vent that 20 psi to the atmosphere. When you get back on it the valve closes. This time though the blades weren't slowed suddenly so it was gentler on the bearings. As a bonus since the blades didn't slow as much its going to take less time to spool your turbo back up to full boost.

Actually I think it's both the tires and the blow off valve (which BTW is not the same thing as a wastegate). The first chirp is definitely the tires but the last part of the sound (and when he lets off the throttle at the end) where it sounds like air is being let out is the blow off valve.

Nice though, if it really is a 12 second car. Sounds like a freaking jet. :)

EDIT:Whoops look like Soy covered it. You could have just said compressor surge ya know. :)

oh..my bad..i always thought those two were the same. The whistling sound that comes after every shift is the blow-off valve correct?

LOL I know, I couldn't help it. If there is something I know about outside of computer that I love to go on and on about its turbo charged cars, and off-roading :)

Want to read a 12 page essay on the pros and cons of running an extra injector? ;)

Damn, that was FINE.......And does it really matter whether the noise was the TC or the tires? It's all pure badness to me.......:))

Heh....came back to see that this tread has turned into a dissertation of the mechanics of a turbocharger! :)

<< Sounds like a freaking jet >>

Speaking of which....that guys car has more gauges than a jet cockpit!

How do you run an extra injector?
Im not literate with the internal workings of a car.
I know how they work genrally, but don't touch them in fear of breaking them.

Indian: right, the bov is the *WHOOOOOOFF* on the shifts, the wastegate is what controls how much boost is created

<< How do you run an extra injector? >>

Well most fuel injected cars are fine with the number of injectors they have. If you have a turbocharged car though and you increase the boost you'll need more fuel to burn with the extra air. A common practice in budget circles is to take a "cold start injector" (commonly seen on some older euro imports) and add it into the intake path. To this you connect a pressure switch that senses the pressure in the intake manifold. When it goes over a set amount, say 14psi, current is applied to the injector and it adds in the necessary fuel to keep the engine from going lean. Anyway thats just a really light overview of an extra injector :) Like I said I can go on on turbocharged stuff for days ;)

That is a pretty nice ride. I wonder if he could get a faster time with an AWD system in there.
