Check out my ported subwoofer box

A few weeks ago, I posted here with plans for my box. I finally got around to building it and I think it's a beauty. Even though I haven't sanded it down and put finishing touches on it, I still think it's damn fine (well to me that is. . because I built it 😛). It was really fun putting it together too.

One thing I'm scared of though, I used PVC pipe for the port lengths and fastened it with construction grade adhesive. I hope that it's strong enough and the ports don't fall off like my rearview mirror did 🙁. Anyway, pics are below!

Well I started in the morning at about 10 to get my supplies. 2 hours at Home Depot/running around getting stuff, then a couple more gluing/screwing/etc... I'd say 5-6 total today. Oh yeah, I didn't put the terminal cap on yet. Going to to it tomorrow to test out the sturdiness of the box.

BTW, I used 3/4" MDF.

The subs are 12" Infinity Reference 1230w. I got the basic specs from the Infinity website, the subwoofer manuals. It's 4 cubic feet, ports tuned to 30hz.

Nice! A lot cleaner than my trunk. Is that dynamat? If so, does it help with the rattle? I've got a factory spoiler on my car and it sounds like crap from the outside with all the rattling and such.

Yeah, I had thought about that, but had too many constraints for space so I had to do them like that. They're about 3" from the back wall.

I thought of that and threw it away. My jigsawing skills aren't pro so one mistake and the piece is gone . . . The port holes are a little messed up too, but not too noticeable.

Yeah... it's nice and clean, That stuff right there is E Dead sound deadening V.1 I think, I bought like 60 sq. feet of it and used it all, it does a decent amount of sound deadening, most of it I found out was coming from my bumper, so I lined some shims with the sound deadening material and put the shims in between the frame of the car and the bumper.. now it sounds a lot better than it did before. On the spoiler thing, I know exactly what you're talking about, one of my friends I had, had a 95 dodge neon and it rattles like a bitch, sounds nasty.

Cool, I'm going to make that my next project!

yeah, My other project right now is making an amp rack and getting that capacitor and amplifier up off of the floor, i'm about 1/3 of the way done... it's so tedious and takes planning, and even with planning it always ends up giving me complications...... And on top of that project is putting a computer in the car with a 7" touchscreen.... I just need power to the computer and I'll be up and running!

I know exactly what you mean. I can't count how many trips I made to Home Depot today, it seemed like we didn't have anything I needed.

I can't wait to test this box tomorrow! I hope it's a big improvement over the previous sealed box which was probably not built to specifications.

Where is the internal bracing? A box that big needs it. You want hte box as rigid as possible for best SQ

Additionally, what kind of car are you planning on putting this in?

I had less then good luck with Edead. I had heard some less then admirable stuff about E in the past but wanted to try some of there stuff and form my own opinion.
I wont be using any E products in the future, accessories or otherwise.

Use an expanding glue, like Gorilla Glue, and/or caulk in any gaps. Use a skinnier jigsaw blade so you can turn it more easily.

Cut it just a touch under sized and start sanding. Best way to make sure you dont go over if your not good with a jigsaw.

I kinda overlooked bracing on purpose. Stupid move, I know, but I'll see how things turn out. I also thought that since the box is ported, the internal pressure won't nearly be as much as a sealed box which I had before, but was just fine.

It's going in a '96 Honda Accord. It will be a very snug fit in the back of the trunk.

Yeah I don't believe it's high grade stuff.... I Might try FatMat sometime, I've already had a few random slabs of my E-dead come off on me which is dissapointing, but it does sound a bit better than before... I actually don't believe the material helps much.. I believe it's more about finding the empty spaces and filling up where two pieces of material are rattling against each other.
