Check my Specs. What would you upgrade next?

Your all gunna probably say processor and thanks for that but in addition to this (say an Intel 800MHz EB) what would you get?

Or would you just wait a while for the new Willy boards and stuff to evolve?

Thanks ppl.

You should be good to go for at least another half a year, depending on what you use your system for, but the obvious choice, if there's any, would be a processor as you said.

If I were to get something now IT would be the Athlon T-bird 800. Then If you're afraid that there are going to be new things and speeds then wait about a half year for the market to settle

I wouldn't upgrade it, your system kicks ass. (CPU is only 'ok' though, but the rest is pretty damn good)

But with a T-Bird, he'd have to get a new motherboard to go along with it, and possibly a new power supply that's Athlon-approved. I'd personally go with either a PIII 600E or 650E and overclock the heck out it. You've got the motherboard to do it.

Thanks for the input ppl. I'm a little bit bias when it comes to CPU's so I wanna stick with Intel, although I'm fully aware that the T-Bird kicks some serious ass I don't want to change mobo just yet just as Erasmus-X said.

Goi I mainly use it for games, Q3A, UT and stuff, bit of VB programming but thats about it. Oh yeah, and talkin to you guyz in this forum. ;)

RSI thanks for the words on encouragement.

Do you guyz think that the P3 800 will drop in price over the next couple of months? It's about £360 in the UK which equates to appx $580 in the states but I know you can get it cheaper over there.

I'm off to a place called Snellville, Atlanta in August/September. Is there anywhere where I might be able to pick up an 800 MHz baby with cb0 stepping as cheap as you like?

Thanx again ppl.

;)

I would hold off for two reasons. First its not like their going to raise the price (I hope :p ), and second, when this 1.13Ghz Paper Pentium 3 launch happens, they should slash the prices on their lower end.

Shagga - yes I would say get a new CPU. I know you're in the UK, and I'm wondering if you're aware of the guys over at http://www.overclockers.co.uk.

Since you already have a P3V4X, how does the sound of an Intel Pentium III 650E (Slot 1) Guaranteed to 866MHz+ for only £199.00 (Excluding: VAT) sound?

Here's the quote:

<< THESE CPU'S ARE LATEST CBO STEPPING.
Running at 650MHz (6.5x100MHz) as standard with 256K of on-die full speed cache, we pre-test and guarantee this CPU to be stable at 866MHz (6.5x133MHz) providing :-

1 - You use it with the , Intel i820 or VIA 133 chipset board or Abit BE6 Rev.2 (available from our motherboard section). 2 - If using the BE6 Rev.2 you must use the latest Coppermine compatible BIOS. 3 - If running your memory at 133MHz you must have PC133 memory.

Please note, many people are running this CPU well in excess of 866MHz. Use the GlobalWin VNS04 or "Just Cooler" P-32SII cooler available from the GlobalWin Coolers/Cpu Coolers or Just Cooler/CPU Coolers section.
>>

So for a little over 200 quid, you could have a processor Guaranteed to at least 866MHz, which you could just slot into your current mobo without needing to upgrade anything else :) I'd say go for it! :)

Broadband, if available in your area. Will make a much larger difference than a processor upgrade.

(said PowerJoe over his 33.6 modem)

Snow Yeah I'm aware of Spie and the other guyz at Overclockers as I've bought a few things from them in the past. (Including my P6 Juno Tower case, go have a look if you want a giggle :p)

£200 for a PIII 650E is a nice thought though. I haven't been on their site for a while as they seemed to spend more time supplying Athlons and struggling like everyone else to get the P3's in stock. I'll check em out now and have a look see.

Piku When's the paper lauch gunna be do you know? But what you say makes sense.

-paldo I'm not too sure about the RAID setup issue. I don't know enough about it to set it up myself, but I'm sure there will be some guyz in this forum that can help. I think it was John who recently converted to a RAID setup and with everyone's help got it sussed. How does this compare to SCSI (Apart from being cheaper that is) but I admit I did show some interest a few months ago when it seemed to be big news and the topic of conversation.

PowerJoe Snow will tell ya, I've signed up for ADSL and will hopefully get it in about 6 months :( Snow will get it before me coming from London I think as I live in York (and there's still plenty of vikings walking around :D) so the progression of change is slow up north. :(

Thanks Again.....

no no no and NO! Do NOT waste money on a new CPU, you've already got a very nice CPU.

Not everything you buy to your computer has to be something that adds speed, try looking at one or more of the following things instead:

Scanner (http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=27&threadid=185134, http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=27&threadid=183771)

Good Printer (http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=30&threadid=191439, http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=27&threadid=182650)

Webcam (most people recommended me either 3Com or Creative, http://www.outpost.com/cgi-bin/bv.cgi?form%25login_type=member&form%25success=%2Ftemplates%2FOutpost%2Findex.tmpl&form%25success_type=template&form%25failure=%2Ftemplates%2FOutpost%2Ffailure.tmpl&form%25failure_type=template&submit%25form=Start&BV_Operation=DynCo_LandingPadReceive&form%25BC=bHcrPRmEMZvp8UpBQxa%2B1%2BDlpXJoHZdDIvbW+2ok%3DZcNSWiV1rxTY%3DccZWS+kdnBSX%3DkcS%2B8lwZi.WDM.Ov7Twii+ZD0abOv0Q.Y3rox63Qhv7X+hg%3DYb5Lt0jcAnhYE%2BJQiITAliTcx+VVEmx5dA13hgsxSS%3Dnd4il..ae8KIeJ5dA1UkcoDZIrsBBH1NxalHHWs.1rRyF3oS8iDTQre2Pzy3ro.5CE1o0E+cH+2LSoH8i%3DMlwY&form%25site_name=linkshare&form%25site_id=GQ1NPHm3C*U-oc%2FSljNpD49jZ6AjzmyL1g&form%25sku=71894 for the 3Com camera)

High-quality gaming mouse (http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=27&threadid=189171)

browse some catalogues and stores and find something nice instead of a CPU that will barely make a difference :)

hi ;)

u say u signed up for adsl! :/

i too was goin to do this but when i looked into it decided Highway be better for gaming :)

the contention ratio for adsl here in uk for home consumers is being set @ 50:1 !!!!! :(
now correct me if im wrong, thats 2mb/50=40kb - am i right in thinking that this could end up bein worse than a good 56k modem connect if everyones surfin @ teatime? :D
i went for highway (isdn 128k) because that 64k/128k is all mine :) and not shared with noone :D, heh, and with unlimited access just round the corner supporting 128k should keep me sweet for a while :D

im gonna wait for adsl to settle down, then we may see more sensible contention ratios like 20:1 at a reasonable price - then me goin adsl :)

ur thoughts on this adsl mullarky be appreciated, as i aint gonna rush into it till things are made more clear about the UK home user version of adsl.

regards,

rockhard :D

If you lived in the us this would be easy, but this might work for you too. Here you can sell a p3 500 for close to 150 on e&ay and then pick up and p3 600 - 700 in the 185 to 220 range. I know one source where they have 650 cbo, and don't mark up the price mainly because they don't know about it, and its blind orderering. Check a few of my previous posts about it. The upgrade will run you around 50 bucks and you should hit 850 minimum regardless of which processor you pick. Mine (650)is runnin at 936 and I am working on 975 right now.

rockhard - You'll have to contact BT for that sort of info.

Well, I sold my 2nd PC. It's spec was -

P2 300MHz
ASUS P2l97-S
128MB PC66 SDRAM
Voodoo 3000 AGP
4.3 GB IBM Ultra Wide SCSI Hard Drive
Iiyama VM 17" Monitor
10x Pioneer CD Rom Drive
Sound Blaster AWE64
Logitech Mouse
Naff Keyboard

Got £350 ($560 Appx) for it. I'm going to add another £250 to it I think, but I'll be damned if I can decide what upgrade to go for.

I've got an ASUS P3B-F and Tower case spare so I guess I'll build this one with the bits I upgrade on my current system. Then once I get ADSL I'll run RC5 on it constantly. If the key isn't found before I get there that is.

:(
