agreed.. you had a bad cop which is why the plug is oily.. its not firing and so the oil is getting on the plug.

Cop=CoilPack?

Funny, Blain, the service guy I talked to, said something about that when he was drawing up my service order.. he said it casually.. hmmm you have a downed cylinder, maybe a seal or coil pack, but who knows, we'll have our techs find out.

I'm calling coil packs. I had mine changed. If the units are "Bremi" then it is DEFINIFITELY coil packs and you should change them all.

Bremi coil packs are those used in the infamous VW 1.8T motor and cause the same issue in BMW's that got them instead of the better Bosch units.

Wow. Good find.

"dreaded SES Light, Limp mode, and lumpy idle" is the best explanation of what my car was doing. Sounds common, and probably why the service guy seemed to think it would be a quick fix.

Not just a find, it happened to my car. If you have Bremi's then they should ALL be changed. If you have Bosch, just the failing one.

The only thing that crosses my mind that isn't covered in the vids was the hissing sound my engine was making. Like highly compressed air was leaking out somewhere. Could it be a combo of a bad vacuum hose AND the COP?

drive it like it is stolen for god's sake.

Haha I would, but I have to take it back tonight!

Dealer called, said Ignition coils were bad. When they first pulled it in, coil 5 was failed. As they were testing coil 3 went out. They replaced them all. He said it purs like new now.

You got lucky. Imagine if they were out of warranty.

I think a whole set is like $200.. So it wouldn't hve been too bad. labor to figure out that was the problem would have cost more, but wasn't too damaging I suppose.

You already figured it out when you swapped the coils, if you had pulled the code again. :D

Good job on the quick repair under CPO warranty.

My Mazdaspeed 6 just started doing that this morning. On-ramp merging into freeway traffic and it starts cutting out, then CEL came on. Seems fine under 1/2 throttle but that's not the point of having a 'Speed 6. Unfortunately it is out of warranty. Will be bringing it to the shop first thing tomorrow morning.

On my two cars coils are about $55-60 a piece and labor cost to replace them is about three hours on the maxima despite the job ACTUALLY taking about 30 minutes--very easy. More involved on the MPV as mentioned.

Wow, a 2004 should not have problems like these... I guess this is just one isolated incident but that sheds some light on German reliability :p

Good luck OP.

Car has been good to me, in regards to drive train. No problems otherwise other than the hyrdraulic pump failing a year ago in the convertible top. They fixed that quickly too.

It's a problem with the supplier, Bremi and happened between 2001-2004ish. BMW switched supply of packs to Bosch after it was identified.

Hey all. I have a little 1996 hyundai excel. When I started her this afternoon. She barely held rev. It was kind of like she was choking and then she would stall. I replaced the spark plugs a week ago. It was my first time doing it. I had a service done a few weeks back and a coulle of problems listed included having the spark plugs and ignition leads changed. Altenator belt changed. Just to name a couple. Any helo would be greatly appreciated!!!
