Check Cashing at Wal Mart?

boredhokie

Senior member
Do they cash checks at walmart? I just got paid in my first real job, but they cut me a check because Direct Deposit takes a couple weeks to activate. Can I take a pretty sizable check to wal mart to cash?

I would just pop over but there isn't one that close to me so I thought I'd save a trip by asking my best buddies here.

Thanks!

open a bank account?

there are several banks that have low minimimums, free checking, and free online bill pay

edit:

wait.. u said you have direct deposit.. why not just deposit that check to your bank then?! what r u not telling us?

write check to landlord monday

SUCCESS!

Haha, yes that is the best way, however I'm a loser and don't have checks yet for my new apartment.

Thanks for all the answers

usually they wont cash a check at walmart for any sizable ammount unless you are buying a LOT of stuff. Like if your check is for more than 1K plan on spending $500+
you can go to one of those check cashing places but most likely they will charge you 5-10% of whatever the check is for.

Deposit first thing monday, write the check monday, your pay check will clear before rent is due. It may even be available to you immediately (all of my accounts allow me immediate access to payroll checks)

Most check cashing places around here are 1%.
5-10% is highway robbery.
