I'd suggest these... ALTEC LANSING 2100 2.1 Speaker System -RETAIL fairly cheap, decent shipping and for the money they sound pretty good, buy.com had a deal on them recently for $30 delivered and I picked up a set for my laptop, the only complaint I have aganist them is that the midrange comming from the sats is a bit weak as they only use Dual 1" woofers, but the Base goes fairly low, and is much less muddy or boomy that most logitech sets I've listend to, I would suggest these for music listening as opposed to something that requires alot of oomph (like explosions in movies or games) but for a basic set of music or just general speakers I'd take them over just about anything else in their price range plus they have a very very small footprint so it makes placing them pretty easy.

Nope, woofers by definition, are designed to specifically reproduce the lower end of the audible spectrum. Just like tweeters for the highs and midrange drivers for the midrange. Just being a driver doesnt make it a woofer.

Technicly you are correct but they are full range drivers and can be refered to as woofers, it's just Semantics....

I like my Logitech X-230 set (it's a fairly recent release), which has dual drivers on the satellites (probably just marketing, but I wouldn't be sure what the truth is on that). Really clear, ample power for the price. Probably a bit more cost effective than the Z-3 set.

Thanks a lot for all of the replies. They will be used primarily for listening to music and occasionally movies. So far from the responses I am thinking either the Logitech Z-3's or some Altecs. Any other responses are still welcome though! Thanks again

I am having a hard time making a good suggestion because I don't know what kind of sound card she has.

I would say that the Logitech Z-640's are a VERY good BUDGET set of speakers. They fall into your price range and can 'upmix' your audio source to make 2-channel audio come out of all of the speakers. Of course, I would say DO NOT buy them, if you/she doesn't have the room to put the rear speakers behind her.

I got my Logitech Z-640's from amazon a month ago for 45 shipped, they are quite solid, but I like gaming and movies, if the speakers are for music only then I might recomend going with some of these guys's nicer 2 speaker setups.
