Cheapest X2

I want to swap out my 3200+ for a X2 3800+ when the prices drop. Any predictions on when and how much. I know Conroe will have a effect on it.

Don't know in the long run, but you can get it now at Fry's for $280 w/ a cheapie MB. That's $20 cheaper than @ NewEgg. Don't know if there's a Fry's near you though.

You might want to try reviewing some of the articles here on AT or other sites and see if the release of Conroe or AM2 is going to have any effect on X2 prices. I've read a lot on the subject but don't recall specifically if there is any predicted effect on pricing.

they haven't come out and say it but with the intel drop in july, you would think amd would need to drop prices like crazy to keep their customers. if not, anybody that is on the edge will go the intel route, imo

I just don't want to go to DDR2 yet. It is suppose to be way cheaper to make but it is still more expensive than DDR. I will not go to DDR2 until late in 2007.

Intel controls the market share AMD would of stayed DDR but they had no choice. I highly doubt that the 3800X2 will go down to 75-100 dollars. I have a hard time thinking that a processor that easily keeps up with the AM2 dual core processors is going to go that low. take a look at the 754 processors see how far those dropped.

I waiting for the price drop too. The new Conroe and AMD2 should have an effect on older X2 stock. How much affect, I don't know, but all we can do is wait and hope for the better.
Hope you get your 3800+ at a good price.

Look at the difference between skt 754 and skt 939. 😉

You may see some deals, especially when Conroe hits but if I don't think you'll see huge price drops.

The worst thing about technology is knowing the chip you paid $300 for now will someday be worth around $20. When I bought this Intel Pentium 4 2.8C chip back in late 2003, it cost $190, now it can be had for around $100 sometimes less.

I would wait until Conroe shows up. The prices on Conroe are very cheap IMO and will drive the X2 prices down very fast. I think the 2.4Ghz Conroe is going to be priced at 280 bucks.

I am pretty sure 2.4Ghz Conroe has shown to spank just about every X2 out there in gaming.

i don't know why you don't understand that just because a newer technology is coming out the older technology doesn't all of a sudden have a huge drop. if it's keeping up with its AM2 equivalent, it shouldn't drop by too much. $50 is a closer estimate, imo, for a price drop (if one ever happens)

just look at the fs/ft forums, everybody dumping their dc amds before the intel price drop...and am2 comes out. my upgrade path will be nf4->skt939->pci-e gpu(7900gt or x1800xl)and a dc when i need it. i am usually always about 1 year behind in upgrading always but since i don't need any extra performance i will probably wait for some time.
