Cheapest way to move out of state?

i grew up in San Diego but moved up here a couple years ago to help out my dad after he had a hart attack. he's got a new job now and moved into his own house so i'm moveing back home to all my friends. you're right that i don't have much money but i never went to college so thats to be expected. i'll be going back to school as soon as i get home.

OK so that makes a little more sense.
You already have a place to stay in SD ??
Your MOM lives there ??

I'd say sell as much stuff as you can.
If you can't sell them all, tell your dad to hold it for you or something.
Then get just grab the minimum and buy a bus or plane ticket.

Or if you do have enough money, buy a car around ~$2000 and drive it to SD.
You can haul most of your stuff in the car I'd imagine.

yes i have a buddy in SD who's going to be needing a new roomate early next year. my mom i'm not sure if she's still down there haven't talked to her in almost 4 years. but i have a fairly large surrogate family down there. the buying a truck and selling off everything that won't fit is sounding like what i'll end up doing. not ideal but o well.

Sell the big bulky stuff. USPS the rest to yourself. I helped some friends do this a few months ago. They ended up with 7 medium sized boxes of stuff that I shipped for about $100.
 
Whatever you do don't learn to drive with a trailer. If you insist, make sure you pack the trailor right so it doesn't flip you when your doing 60+ on the highway.

Agreed.

I'm moving from AZ back to IA. I found that it's actually cheaper to hire a freight/shipping company to come move me than rent my own truck and drive it. Freight company loads everything for me, insures it, moves it back in, and does it better than I could. The moving company was the same price as I would pay for a truck, BUT I don't have to pay $500 in gas to drive the thing from AZ to IA. Saved myself a good chunk of money and convenience there.
 
Get rid of anything you don't absolutely need, USPS it down there, fly a commuter flight down there. What are you going to do with a cheap car/truck that probably won't pass emissions down in Cali? The gasoline costs will be pretty high too. And Cali might charge you tax on the auto if it was bought right before the trip.
 
Ship your stuff via an insured carrier, and make sure you specify signature required. And then take a bus/plane with a couple days worth of stuff in a suitcase, meet your new local delivery person as he unwittingly helps you move in.
 
Those of you that are shocked that he doesn't have a driver license don't know what it's like to live in Portland. I don't know exactly where he lives in Portland, but it is very doable to live in NW Portland without a car. Unlike most cities in the West, everything is within walking distance in this part of Portland. Mass transit is absolutely superb. The planners who built this city are genius at urban planning.

And you would be right. CA DMV will charge a sales tax of up to 8.5% depending on your county of residence if the car was bought within the past 24 months. Various other fees will add up to about 10% of the car's market value.

Southwest routinely has sub-hundred dollar fare from PDX to LAX or Lindberg with a 14-day advance purchase.



 
call up a moving company and see how much it would cost to take your stuff down with you in the passenger seat.

A phone call to find out is a lot cheaper than doing it the wrong way could be. 🙂
