Cheapest way to get ESPN?

So I've ditched my DirectTV subscription since all it's being used for is ESPN and my old SD Tivo DVR and didn't really justify the $60/mo cost. I've replaced it with a homebuilt HD MCE and Netflix streaming for $8/mo (which works awesome btw). What are my options to get ESPN for the occasional time I want to watch some sports events for cheap? I currently have internet thru Verizon FIOS.

I did the same and well there really isn't a better option... At least that I know of. I may go with digital basic with my cable company and grab a cablecard.

But that doesn't help you.... It helps me cause that's still 100 down to 50.

What sports do you want to watch?

NHL = NHL Center Ice streaming
MLB = MLB streaming

These are both official and pretty good quality. Work fine on a HTPC.

You can't. This is why ESPN makes a boatload and how cable/DTV retain the majority of subs.

I am about to move, and where we are going we will only get DSL. I know this will make me sound like an idiot, what is the difference between a MCE and streaming downloaded programs off of my W7 machine?

ESPN3 with the Xbox360? Have to have a Gold Live account though, and it's still not the same as ESPN/ESPN2.

Impossible.

ESPN has to pay for the Longhorn network somehow :).

MCE is part of windows that lets it function as a DVR and legally record shows.

Depending on the programs, "downloaded programs" may be breaking a law or three.

you could probably get a competitive deal from your cable company for Internet+basic cable TV. Cable Internet is slower than FIOS but should be plenty for Netflix HD streaming (requires about 5 Mbps).

Just priced out Charter the other day and the promo rate is $65 before taxes for 12 Mbps and digital TV. When the teaser rate expires, you'd have to call back and haggle it down.

Noticed that Verizon has bundles w/ DirecTV but since that's still 2 separate companies, cable should still be cheaper.

Just go to the bar and drink, free ESPN!

You read my mind. This was my initial reasoning for ditching DirecTV, that's $60 bucks a month I can use for beer money at a bar and watch the games with other sports fan. I like to watch football and basketball.

Good luck.

Live sports is pretty much what is keeping me from cutting the cable.

My family watches TV shows and the like, but I pretty much just watch Netflix and sports (and The Walking Dead, but, sadly, that may end soon, too).

Get yourself arrested. I bet they have ESPN in the tank. It's cheaper than a bar and you see all your friends there.

ESPN is a big reason why cable is so expensive. Disney forces cable companies to purchase a "bundle" of channels to include with ESPN. If the cable co doesn't want the other channels, then they get no ESPN. This is why the Disney channel doesn't have external commercials, but isn't a premium channel anymore (it used to be, before Eisner put "bundling" together).

Fuck the Disney channel, I just stream.
