Why call when you have e-mail on your side?

Use a prepaid sim and a prepaid phone card FROM China for calling to the US or Europe.

Or use a redirect service with local numbers like TalkLoop.com or Onesuite.com

where in China? north or south?

with a china mobile sim, you can use a code (17951) to dial to the US using voip, and it's cheaper than regular...

they sell the prepaid sims as soon as you step off the airplane in Beijing.

nono i don't need to call china. I will be IN China, I want to call the US when I am IN China.

Don't use your cell phone. Get a VOIP phone like vonage. Connect to a network somewhere in china and it will be a local call to the US.

you can use both. just plan out how much you want to talk, that way you don't go overboard with your budget. don't be robotic though. if the call is important, the phone will do fine, otherwise if it's regular talk, you know VOIP ain't a bad thing.

I'm going to be in shanghai, I'll check it out as i've never used the VOIP. I'm going to be staying in hotels and I just want to stay connected to a few people back in the Us when I'll be away via phone.
