Hey guys, ive searched the video forum and found nothing. (although i didnt spend more than a few minutes.) I am creating a standalone DivX player with an old 750 duron i have lying around. There is a DivX OS that you can load which will turn the machine into like a standalone dvd player that can decode MPEG4. The overview can be found here:

Anyway, i have everything i need except a video card that will output to a tv screen. (unless i wanna use my 6800...but thas my gaming card.) I want the cheapest graphics card, dont care if its used or new, as long as it works, that outputs to composite video. (since s-video is more mainstream, if its cheaper, then tell me.) I have an old MSI tv tuner laying around, is there a way i can get it to OUTPUT the video instead of recieving it? Thx for any help.
 
Going by that guy's "DivXOS" he prefers a Matrox G450. Smart man. 😉

Why not just use something like myHTPC as a frontend and use normal Windows?

i mite end up using normal windows, but that still leaves the work of finding a cheap tv-out card. there is a savage3d with s-video out on newegg for 15 dollars shipped. I think this just mite fit the bill. But the tv that i wanna use it on only accepts composite.

Get at least a Radeon 7200 / gF2MX or better from FS/T.

can you really notice a difference? My tv upstairs only accepts composite, so thas the only way i can go. Would there really be a noticable difference in the tv-out picture if using a savage3 or a gf2mx?
 
Use a Radeon 7000 if you're really cheap, and at least a 9000 for better quality.

Why? The TV signal (composite or SVideo) from ATi cards is cleaner and more adjustable from the driver than NVidia's. The 9000 series has an improved video replay engine over the 7000, bringing you more advanced deinterlacing and filtering.
 
btw, today's graphics cards also auto-detect whether you've connected just one wire for Composite or both for SVideo. So even if a Radeon card has an SVideo-out, it'll do Composite just as well if you connect it like that.
 
I say you should go with the ATI card, because the old Nvidia ones don't looks as good in 2d and their TV-out aren't as sharp.

I aggree with Peter, you should use a ATI card. The 7000s are good, any higher numbers is better. Even though they have a s-video out, you can just get a converter to change it to Composite.

I'll chime in and say that I agree with everyone telling you to go ATI for this job. I just recently got a sapphire radeon 7000 for the sole purpose of TV-outing on the egg for $40, and it does a decent job of putting up a clean image on my tv. You could probably find something used on the FS/FT forum for slightly less.
 
well the church I help at uses ATI Rage 128's to run the power point, for short video clips and DVD it would still work fine for TV output.
