I've been looking for this as well.
I think it's a ripoff for MS to be charging so much for this.

Looking back, I purchased Windows 3.1, win 98 and win ME (mistake). Paid around 70-80 for most (ME was around $40 i think). I would prefer to have a legal copy myself and there's nothing wrong with that. I know a lot of people think that MS is some evil empire, maybe, maybe not, but either way they do have the right to make a profit off of their products just like any other business (and let's face it, the vast majority of us do use their products).

The bootleg copies are really no good unless you have a valid key (that activation BS) anyway. Surely this has greatly reduced the piracy of XP, so you would think therefore that MS could in fact charge LESS than they have traditionally charged/ Instead they jack the price up. If they charged less, I'd be willing to bet they sell a whole lot more (practical business philosophy, lower price, lower profit per unit, but greater net profit).

I was willing to pay a little for a valid copy, but pay an average of 150 for this? From what I've been hearing it can be a real headache for people like myself (and I'm sure most people in this forum) who frequently upgrade and/or refresh installations of operating systems. Why would anyone want to pay that much and have to go through hassles with MS every time you swap harware in/out of your system?

I've played around a little with XP pro and I like it, but for myself, I just don't think it's worth it.

btw, I noticed a few places offering a $75 rebate on the upgrade version. The catch - only if just purchased a system with the home version already installed or if you just purchased the home version. Comes out to the same cost as just buiying it in the first place.

You're "pretty happy with XP", but it isn't "worth paying for" is an interesting combination of thoughts. Did you read the posting guidelines, by any chance? I'm not thread police, but I do think your line of reasoning is OT. You see, the originator of the thread asked for the cheapest source for Windows XP Pro, not an illegal source for Windows XP Pro. And he made that clear when he responded to this comment:

I hear Kazaa is doing a good deal on it at the moment

I'm thrilled that you could find Windows XP Pro at such a reasonable price. If I knew your employer, I'd suggest he take the same attitude about your work -- you know, pay you for it when he figures its worth paying for. I suppose he's "pretty happy" with your work right now, but that's no reason for him to have to pay you for it.

I don't understand so many people in this thread trying to insist that this fellow use a purloined copy of the OS. Thought at least some of you were professionals. You don't even need ethics or morals to make this decision. Just common sense.

If it is worth using, it must be worth paying for.

Which version of Windows do you have, and what is machine in question is use for?

I still uses Win98 on one of mine machine at home. So far all of my Windows games & apps I have work perfectly on the Win98 machine, while the rest of my home machines funtion perfectly on various Linuxes.

If you really want WinXP then go for it, but you might want to look at the software you currently have & see if you need to upgrade the OS to justify the $ ++ time.

If learning is what you are looking at, then there is not thing better than Unix or Linux that can be download for free.

I played with linux... it was a headache for me personally. The whole driver thing is a pain.. why cant you download and exe with self isntalling drivers? I would like to use linux, and I would LOVE to PAY for a competitor to windows. I am not a noobie, and I have quite a bit of skill with most windows operating systems, and pc hardware, but I dont want to take the time to leanr linux, because the eas of use just isn't there for me.

Anyway, I would also like to know where to get pro for cheap

and also, why is pro better than home?

Hi,

Basically, if you're not part of a domain (i.e. your not part of a serious LAN) or don't need the added features of security or dual processor capability that XP pro brings over home, then you can do without xp pro.

Cheers,

Andy

I saw the full version of XP Pro at the computer swapmeet at the Pomona Fairgrounds in LA for only $35.00, no box just the CD like OEM version. If I had known ahead of time I would not have paid full price for it at CompUSA, I would have picked it up there.

what would you term a serious lan?

Also, I can get the academic version of pro from newegg for 86$ which seems to be less than home anywhere

I definitley dont see home for 30$ like someone said

Hi,

By "serious LAN" I meant you needed to move from peer-to-peer (workgroup) to a clint-server (domain) model. This really isn't necessary unless you have many machines/departments/subnets.

Hope that clarifies,

Andy

Thanx for sticking up for me Derango.

ST. FRANCIS, I think, put it this way: "ONLY A MAN IS AS HE APPEARS IN THE EYES OF GOD."

Write that on a small card to keep in your wallet; it'll serve you well, pretty much through your life.
And after, look up Rudyard Kipling's poem, "If" Worth memorizing.

Stick to your guns on buying it.

That is tempting, but you may take it home to find out that it has already been activated!
