Cheapest place for legit Windows 7 keys?

So, my grandma has gotten to the age where she's confined to her house now, and so I went out and got a 2nd-hand laptop for her so she can play some games on it (she enjoys Sudoku and crosswords, things like that) to keep her mind active. I'm looking for a Windows key to put on it, a legit one of course (see my WTB thread), and am just trying to find one inexpensively. Does anyone know of any 3rd party sites that generally have some for on-the-cheap?

If the computer is a few years old you can look up for some store with off-lease/refurbished computers, most of them are in MRR or MAR programs(info), and they could offer Win7 Home for like ~$30

She's going to be using her neighbor's internet (with his consent), and connecting with Windows 7 is much easier to handle (for the both of them) with Windows 7 over XP.

This is against all internet providers TOS.

If she really wanted Win 7 it would have been better to buy a used laptop with it pre-installed.

IMHO $100 for an OS is not even something worth trying to circumvent. A gray market / black market key that gets killed is going to be much more problematic for supporting.

Buying a used license off ebay if you can would probably be the cheapest or finding someone here that has one to sell.

It's against TOS for someone else to use his internet connection, with his consent? 🙄 Thank you for that info, but neither of them care and if the IP finds out then it's not her problem I guess.

Who's trying to circumvent anything regarding the key?

Let me explain to you with your rolling eyes.

It would be pretty easy for a "dude" (like maybe you call yourself) to buy a big internet connection and then just share it for a fee or otherwise with neighbors.

When most ISP's are selling you a residential connection, they are just looking to service a household, not more than that.

It's great a dude that has a 'Batman' handle thinks crime is OK as long as it hurts someone else.

I wasn't rolling my eyes at you, I was rolling them at how ridiculous TOS for certain services are. If you read them carefully enough even, it looks like most state that even someone visiting isn't allowed to use them, i.e. a visiting relative or friend who's staying in your house.

Thanks for the insults; I see you're making sure to keep your reputation around here.

I'd use GNU/Linux on the machine. Either Xubuntu or Lubuntu. As long as the Wireless card is supported, it should work great, and give a virus-free experience with lots of great casual games available. That said, I don't understand what the O/S has to do with connecting to a wireless network. None should be any easier/harder than another, but giving anyone XP with support ending is irresponsible imo.

Thanks to everyone in responding (helpfully) in this thread. I found someone selling an unused OEM key for $50 so I'm going that route.

It's not an insult when I am simply informing you that you are breaking the rules. Last I checked AT is not about circumventing TOS and other agreements.

I have never seen a TOS that says visitors are in violation of the agreement.

I get the feeling you'd attempt to lecture people that drive 5mph over the speed limit.

No, but sharing internet across residences not only violates things, but also puts the owner of such a network in potential hot water.

Say grandma's grand kids come over knowing that it's not her network.

All sorts of bad things can happen with the owner of the account holding the bag.

3rd party security software support for XP isn't going to end just because MS ends support. Your logic fails.

And forcing Linux on granny who wants to play games isn't the solution either. Are you going over to her house every time she can't get something to install and run? Are you going to teach her how to run Window games in emulation? XP may be obsolete but it still works.

Security software to backup a failed core model is the failure. Reactive security software is largely a joke. It's a perpetual catchup to malware that gets released, and is always behind.

Nice loaded terminology with the use of "forcing". Everything is "forced", including some other version Windows. It's not like Granny has to bootstrap her computer and compile Linux to get things running. She gets a modern desktop, and a safe repository loaded with games, and anything else she could possibly want. There is no "try" to get things running; it just works. My 80 year old mother runs Ubuntu just fine, and she can't reliably use facebook. If it isn't a problem for her, it isn't a problem for anyone else.

@ lxskllr

I believe you are making some unsupported assumptions:

a) The OP is familiar and able to install/configure Linux
b) The OP has the knowledge/ability/patience to teach granny how to use a new OS
c) Granny has the capacity/patience to learn something different

The majority of people use Windows for a reason (familiarity) and that reason is the same why Linux is only used by a fraction of the population.

Food for thought.

a) If someone can install Windows, they can Install GNU/Linux. Any distro even approaching mainstream holds your hand for you. It can be as complicated as you like, but pressing Next will get you a usable install.

b) There's nothing to teach. Granny gets a password, and she needs to enter it when she logs in, or updates the system. Otherwise, there's nothing Granny needs to know that's different from Windows. The only change I can think of she might run into is GNU/Linux uses case sensitive file names. myfile, MyFile, and MYFILE are all distinct file names. That's a stretch though. a search for myfile will return all results.

c) Again, there's nothing to learn. Day to day operation is the same as Windows. The only differences work against Window's favor.

This thread wasn't about the Internet access, it was about the purchase of an OS (which, I now realize, is in the wrong forum).

You called me "dude" in a derogatory manner, as well as making fun of my handle with no idea to the reference, also in an insulting manner.

Your comments brought nothing to the discussion in an informative or helpful manner.

So yeah, dude brosef, it was insulting.

Since I have a copy of Windows 7 now, I'm just going to ask this thread to be closed before it's derailed any farther and Alkemyst has another thread to crap all over.
