7600 GT maybe? Not the cheapest but cheap enough. Certainly cheaper than what you paid for a Radeon 9700 back then. ;)

7600GT would be a good choice. Don't touch 8500*. 8600GTS would be good enough (but still not good in the absolute sense) but the 8x00 series eats too much power so I wouldn't recommend it anyway.

The 8x00 lower-midrange series underperform compared to the dx9 cards out there for the same price. Unless your looking for HDMI capabilities and such, it's not recommended to buy a low/midrange dx10 card.

7600gt, not sure if it comes passively cooled, I know the 7600gs does though, doesn't run to hot, and is of course very quiet. It also should come fairly cheap, and still perform decently-ish in games, don't expect to be running stalker or something like that on high, at resolutions past 1024*786 :p

well um, pretty much any card is gonna be better than a radeon 9700, especially the non pro version. i know the 6600gt is a tad faster than a 9800xt, and i think i read the 7300gt's are about on par with the 6600gt. in any case, pretty much any geforce 7 series or radeon x1k series card will at least match a radeon 9700.

9700 is barely faster than a x700 pro. so i suppose by that logic a 6600gt or something would be faster and really cheap

i had forgotten about the 6600's.

i think that's what i'm gonna do.

like i said above, i'm not *too* interested in graphics performance, more for cheapness.

as far as cooling goes, i have a VF900 that has lost it's home, searching for a new one. so that'll do...assuming compatibility isnt a problem.

this rig doesnt do anything pretty much but bot in lineage 2. it's an ingame bot, running 2 instances minimum. that's it. the 9700 works just fine for it's purposes, but i want a new card capable of taking the video card fan i'm gonna give it. and it has to be PCI-E, cause i'm changing out the motherboard as well to whatever is cheapest and available at frys.
