I need a HDMI adapter capable of passing audio from my new Macbook to a TV. Can anyone recommend an inexpensive example?

Is this new as in the one that JUST came out? If so, then the MiniDP now passes the audio.

Yes, it's the brand-new one with the various upgrades (including audio through MiniDP). However, I'm not sure if the $5 Dealextreme adapters will pass audio.

Ah, that is a larger question then. What is the return policy on that one? Have you looked into the prices on the Monoprice adapters?

Any update on this? I know the new batch of mbps pass audio via hdmi now but I can't find an adapter locally (best buy). Haven't tried taking the long trip to the apple store either.

There are many websites claiming to have these... everyone I search for and find always say they are out of stock or on backorder...

Luckily I wont need one myself for a couple more months, so I'm waiting a bit... be interested if you find one thats actually in stock somewhere.

To be honest, I'm shocked these aren't all over the place. Generally speaking, accessories make a ton of money for all involved.

Some of them don't pass audio? What's the deal with that?

The funny thing is that in the Belgian Apple store the only dp to HDMI they sell is the DR Bott adapter which doesn't pass audio
when I mentioned it in Apple store yesterday the Apple dude gave me a strange look and said "Really?"

This actually kind of pisses me off. I'm enjoying my brief hop into the Apple world but the inability to find an hdmi solution that passes both audio and video is frustrating. I expected more from this company considering I thought one of their strengths was in the multimedia aspect of their devices.

apple pushes displayport. displayport can carry hdmi - this you'd use display port or displayport to hdmi adapter. the audio routing i can't comment on their software (osx) but windows has no problems with routing audio through displayport (or hdmi through displayport). It's just a video card at the end of the day sending digital i/o.
