cheapest ddr ram that runs at cas 2 and 400mhz?

planning to get an nforce2 board and shoot for 200fsb. whats the cheapest ram that can do the job: cas 222 1t commmand...(tightest memory timings) at 400mhz and hopefully in dual mode too?

If you want a guarantee of 200MHz with tight timings on the ram, I think the cheapest is HyperX pc3500 at eXcaliberPC. It is $70. - $75. per 256MB stick depending on when you buy it (sales on weekends).

If you want a guarantee of 200MHz on the motherboard, get an Abit NF7-S rev. 1.2. Make sure it is rev. 1.2.

ummm thats going to be tough, can't really get "cheap" ram that can do that....heck expensive ram like corsair isn't guaranteed to do that. But your best bet for budget ram that can oc well seems to be the kingston hyper x, its good stuff

yeah that abit board rev 1.2 is what im planning to get and just needed the right ram. I'm just confused by all the options that are available. there is some samsung 512mb pc3700 (466mhz) cas 2.5 for 120 or some samsung pc3500 for 85... would any of those run at tightest memory at 400mhz?

That sounds like generic memory, not True Samsung. If it is generic, don't get it. Nforce2 boards are very picky on the memory. Don't skimp on the memory. Many people have gotten memory that doesn't work on these boards. AMDMB.com has a forum for Abit where a search will turn up a lot of info for you.
I think for the 512MB stick, the TwinMoss with Winbond chips at MemoryX would be a good deal. I think its like $140.
Are you getting two 512MB sticks or one?

In any case, I would recommend going to either Abit's or the memory manufacturer's site and making sure whatever you buy is on their compatibility list for the NF7. Or get something that many others have had good results with. AMDMB.com forums is a great place to check for that.

Was that 2/2/2/5, like XMS LLs, or 2/2/2/6 or 7? And dual channel using 4 x 512, or 4 x 256?

Most of the votes here go to the new price/performance leader, HyperX. I finally saw the light Thursday and ordered 4 of their 3000/512s for a 8INXP Granite Bay, which has a much ower max FSB than the nforce2, therein keeping me on the sweet spot at $85 per, shipped. When they all come in (I got the last 3 at Newegg, who shipped immediately, and who has subsequently restocked, and the fourth at GoogleQuer, who was still packing yesterday afternoon), I'll post here. Even though the results will be cross-platform, the underlying issue involving the tradeoffs between price/performance, timing/rated speed, 2/4 chips, 256/512, etc., should apply to the dream nforce system.

2/2/2/5 at 400mhz is what I wanted but I suppose cas 2 3-3-7 at 400mhz in dual channel mode is good enough. I want to get 2*512 meg sticks but might just go for 2*256.

on a side note, my epox kt266a most relaxed setting is cas 2.5 3-3-6. what kind of memory setting does the abit nf7-s rev1.2 support?

In any case, dual channel 'doubles' your bandwidth on the cheap. Populating both channels doubles your fun. Prior to LL, the tight XMS timings were guaranteed only when using 1 chip, not 2. FAIK, the issues in the synchronization of 4 may grow exponentially. Still, the computing power, or the bragging rights, of running 2GB is irresistable.


Talon discovered the HyperX a month ago. Kingston has the financial clout to establish a new price/performance point.

My HyperX pc3500 runs at 200Mhz fsb (400MHz DDR) in dual channel mode at Cas 2-2-2-5. I've had it up to 216MHz async just to check it out. This stuff rocks.

LOL, for one you dont want the cheapest, the absolute cheapest is normally generic. And you also cant ask that because it depends were you buy it. A good idea is to goto a site like ebay, and do a 'buy it now' search for ' 512mb pc3200 ' and sort by lowest price then scroll down to you start to see name brand (samsung, micron, etc)...
