I was asked by a friend to build a computer for him for under $100.

Looking at a Celeron 1 gig, motherboard with on board video and sound, used hard drive and case, 64 meg ram.

That's just plain stupid. Tell your friend to save some money and get something better. It doesn't have to be fast, but get some new, higher quality parts in there. When I first started building PC's, I used to do stuff like that and had nothing but problems with Windows and drivers and just about anything else that could go wrong. Trust me, it's worth the extra money. If a friend told me they wanted a computer for less than $100, I would direct them to goodwill or the local dump.

EDIT: Sorry, didn't want to appear mean, but I am completely serious.

a minimum computer would be:

NFORCE mobo (ASUS A7N266-vm perhaps) $80
Duron 1ghz $25ish on AT FS/T
128megs ram $20
20 gig HDD $25
Case $20
CD-rom or burner $20 for a cdrom, $40 for a decent burner

Total $190

if he needs a monitor, or KB/mouse you can of course add that to the $190.

Do ya know anyone sellin at that price? Cause i could use one...

nope. but I bought 2 40 giggers for $90, so I figured it'd be around $25 for a 20. I'm just looking on FS/T... maybe $25 was a bit low.

JAWS, check out this thread He's got a decent cheap system for sale. Duron 1ghz

All parts have gotten so cheap. I remember building an AMD K6-2/450MHz for about $400-$500 minimum with NO monitor a few short years ago.

my experience is that building a system that cheap will not make him happy. For 100 dollars, you can't game, you can't run modern professional grade software well enough to be all that productive. It pretty much becomes a dumb terminal for composing email and typing up documents. I also believe licenses for software will cost more than the hardware.
