I recommend T-Mobile pre-paid because you can use any unlocked GSM phone, of which there are plenty since it's the worldwide standard. It'll also work fine overseas if you ever need to do that.

On page plus you *have* to use one of their limited, crappy phones.

No you can use any verizon phone and i believe even phones from other carriers if you unlock them.

I use Net10 as my only phone, and it's $30 every 2 months for 300 minutes(10cents per minute call, 5cents per text). The minutes roll over, and I currently have over 1,000 minutes surplus.

Edit:
Fuckin' software can't discern anything that isn't one of the 26 letters of the alphabet :^S

For very minimal use (exactly like what you mentioned, a couple of times use per week), and if you are in a good AT&T native coverage area and already have either an AT&T locked GSM phone or any unlocked GSM phone, check out h2owirelessnow.com

They are AT&T MVNO and their network coverage is the same with AT&T GoPhone (basically native AT&T towers, no roaming).

I'm talking about their 'Minute' plan. It's true pay to go with the highest rate of 14c/min and 5c/txt (10c the first text of the day). Their $10 and $20 refill expires in 90 days, which is pretty much what makes this a great deal.

Their 'starter pack' of sim card costs $10 + $5 shipping from their website, but I found some reseller on eBay that's selling it for less than $6 shipped. The kicker is that when I activated the sim card, it gave me a bonus of $7 in that account, which practically means that they gave me a buck to open a line + sim card :) (not sure if this is how they all are though, just my experience).

Added: if you don't already have a phone you of course can buy it from them from as low as $15 or get it from somewhere else.

This...

What are they going to roam on? They use Verizon's network... completely.

I should mention my wife has a Droid on the prepaid $29.95 1200 minute/1200 text/50mb data plan, and I just activated a Droid Eris on per-minute prepaid plan.

The only phone's you CAN'T use are Verizon phones with blacklisted ESN's, Verizon Prepaid phones that have never been activated (ie: buy a prepack from Walmart and try to activate it on PP before it ever touches VZW), and Blackberries.

Like a few others stated earlier. Cheapest would probably be at&t gophone. Just pick up a $100 card. You can go to http://www.pinzoo.com/wireless-refill-minutes/att-cingular-go-phone-prepaid-airtime-cards/ and pick up one for ~$95. I've bought from them a couple of times. Once from ebay when bing cash back was at 30% off and once straight from their site. I think they call you to confirm your purchase. They're pretty legit.

The problem with GoPhone is that the cheapest you can keep the line active is $15/month (without any use) or $100/year (which is a lot of money up front for something you're barely using). Compare this with $10/90 days as I mentioned above, with the same exact coverage. It's no contest.

And of course their rates are horrible at 25c/min calls and 20c/txt, while this wouldn't make a whole lot of difference with 10 minutes of use/week and no texting as the OP mentioned.
