Cheaper, faster, stronger?

I want to build a dual processor system and would like some input on what a good setup for the least amount would be? I already have a Barton 2500@2100Mhz and 1 gig of pc 2700 ddr. I am considering getting a Rapter 74gig to spice up the new rig as well.
As I see It I have 2 options:
AMD Opteron dual 940 with an Opteron 246

Or
Intell dual Xeon 2.8ghz.

Right now I am doing SoB, FaD and sometimes DPAD. But my taste in DC projects changes according to the dire needs of the team 😉
Now for a kink, I am trying to stay under $600.00 for both processors and motherboard (or as close to that as possible)

Despite my love for AMD, I've observed HT enabled P4 systems in DPAD and SoB to have a significant advantage.

If the system is for crunching, then Xeon is the way to go right now.

Can you really get (2x) 246 Opterons and motherboard for under $600?

For that number looks like you need to stay with AMD 2800 MPs. Decent Xeons would be way over that price.

BTW: I have a couple and they do pretty well for crunching. Xeons 3.2's would do better but for the $$$ you can't beat the AMDs.

I think I might go Opteron ( I game and program too) and just get 1 processor, then in a couple months grab another.

I think new Xeon procs are due at the end of the month. Will prices on current Xeons go down after that? 2.66 ghz are at about $230 now. Bit cheaper for OEM. I've been slowly working my way through a BIG thread at 2CPU on the Asus PC-DL which is a little over $200 now.
