my desktop has a 27" monitor does 2500 x 1400. (2500 vertical).

my 11.6" netbook does 1300 x 768. (768 vertical)

nowadays, I only use my netbook when im at a coffee shop to surf the web.
im tired of paging down. I want to see more vertical.

I figured its time to get a tablet that can do at least 1920 x 1080. (1920 vertical)

recommendations on an inexpensive one?

I just bought a Lenovo Tab 2 10.1, and am very impressed. Compares favorably with my Samsung Tab Pro 8.4. It just came out and has quad core MediaTek soc, 1920x1080 IPS display, 2gb memory, 16gb storage. Runs KitKat 4.4 with Lenovo saying Lollipop upgrade next month. Best of all it runs a plain Google interface like Nexus. No bloatware; the few apps installed can all be removed. Only 3gb of the 16gb are taken up by system, leaving the rest empty. Has all the features except 2 things - no HDMI/mhl output (but does have mirrorcast built in) and no auto screen brightness. All this for $199.99. Available almost everywhere; got mine at Best buy.

I would recommend the Nexus 7 or Tesco Hudl 2 (both are FullHD).
You can also have a look at a list of the best budget tablets here so you make a comparison yourself for which is the best tablet for your son.

What do you think about Windows 8.1 tablets?

i have 1 win 8.1 tablet. navigating desktop is a nightmare with fingers.
if i just want to consume content, i would pick up the android tablet laying around the house somewhere instead of the windows sitting in front of me

I just picked one of those up for my son. Great tablet for the price.

Side note, they do pop up on eBay too. I picked his up pretty much brand new (used for photos) for $160.
