I have my sony 600w 5.1 dolby/dts reciever set up. It has optical input and digital inputs (RCA). I would like to hook my pc up to this reciever, obviuosly I need a sound card to make this work. I can use the digital or optical input, no preference. (UNDER $20 please). Could use a phono-->RCA adapter on the reciever digital input or not?

Why go with a cheap sound card when hooking it up optically/digitally to a 600W system?

b/c I don't need all the extra sound enhancing cr@p the high-end cards have. I just need a clear, digital or optical output to the reciever. I don't really want a"cheap" (junk) one, I want an "inexpensive" one :)

It's going to be a digital output, a $100 soundcard isn't going to make 1s and 0s sound better than a $20 soundcard. You can pick up a cheap Soundblaster Live! (even the original non-5.1 versions) that has a digital minijack output and use a minijack to RCA cable to connect to the digital coax input of your receiver. I was connecting my HTPC that way until I upgraded to a nForce board and used the integrated APU.

u can get cards far cheaper than the creative brand...

yamaha chipset based cards (i.e. by aopen) sport optical out, cmedia (i.e. zoltrix nightingale pro) and other cheaper chipsets have cards that sport optical out...mostly optical, few coaxial.

the digital out on my mainboard was really cheap too...free.

I'm tickled that my A7N8X board has a coax digi out. :D I just wish it had a coax in. :(
