Cheap rental trucks?

My girlfriend is moving from out of state to be with me and we need a way to move her stuff. Uhal quoted her something like $1300 for a 17ft truck for about 1200 miles. This seems very hefty. Is there a better/cheaper way to do this?

you have to shop around

one time i used penske and another time uhaul

go online and get a quote for 2-4 companies

are you doing round trip, or one way? One way is usually a bit more up front, but round trip can kill you with the milege (unless you get an unlimited milege contract)

Avoid U-haul, their trucks are the worst, some 20-30 years old.

Penske usually has brand new trucks, Budget and Ryder are fairly new and nice as well. Also check if diesel or regular gas is cheaper where you're at and request a truck accordingly.

Check with places like Upack - they might be competitive on price by the time you pay truck rental, mileage and gas prices for that long of a move.
