I'm looking for a cheap (>800), reliable pc w/ monitor and printer. whats the best out there for that? NOT for gaming, just surfing the web, powerpoint, and word. nothing fancy. thanks

best factory bang for your buck is a dell. you can get a hell of a pc for $599 or less from dell and not have to have a refurb at all 🙂

You can get what you want really cheap in the FS/FT forum if you are willing to spend some time looking 🙂 You could probably get the parts you need for under $300 easily...

Fixed 😉

Check out the "outragous deals" section of Dell small biz. I picked up a P4 3.0Ghz system with a free printer(probably the cheapest one they got, haven't used it , still in the box) no monitor for $400 after MIR a few months ago.
Dell deals

You could build your own. Look for some deals and go crazy. For that $ without a video card (no gaming, right-use onboard GFX or whatever's dirt cheap) you can get a really fast rig.

Prescott @ 3.0-$165
1 GB PC3200 under $120
Decent->good motherboard with dual-channel ram, HT support and onboard GFX- $50-100
Pick a hard drive, optical drive, case (find something that comes with a pretty decent power supply), probably do without a floppy.
Buy a monitor locally or refurbed from Newegg to avoid the shipping charges-they're a killer.
Printers are all pretty cheap. Research what ink costs before you buy one.
You should be able to come in under your goal with a 3 GH P4 with a Gig of ram. Dell would prolly be able to hook you up with an OS and other software way cheaper than retail, though so that's the rub. If you have the SW you want, BYO. If you also want to upgrade SW your best bet is gonna be with a major manufacturer.

edited for spelling

heh...not a lot of wrong forum nazis in here, like OT 😀

We assume he will be running a DC project on the computer once he gets it. So, we want him to get the most bang for the buck. The P4 with HT sounded great! 🙂

Look at the Dell small business unit. A nice 2.8 P4 with HT, 40 gb HD, only 256 ram, and a nice 19" lcd screen for $549 after $100 rebate.
Not a bad system for under $600.
Drop another $50 or so at newegg/zipzoomfly to upgrade the memory, and you are all set.
