My friend is trying to put a pc together and he seems to want to go with all the cheap parts. Im on the phone with him now and he is wondering what is wrong wit cheap ram......so what is wrong it? Say the cheapest ram on pricewtach named generic!

Some people seem to think that cheap generic RAM is fine while others won't touch it. If you don't plan on doing any extreme overclocking them generic RAM should be sufficient. Personally, I would go with a name brand. Crucial RAM is very good and pretty darn cheap. Plus, you have the security of knowing that you have a quality company backing you, which is something you may not get with generic RAM.

If you don't do any overclocking and you're running a 100MHz memory bus then the generic PC100 will be fine. However, check to see what kind of RAM the motherboard accepts. Some mobos don't like generic RAM.

You say that your friend is going with all cheap parts. One thing about cheap parts is that a lot of times they don't like to play nice with eachother.

I used to buy generic ram and within a period of 6 months I had 4 pieces go bad in my system and in ones I had built for people. I even bought a new motherboard thinking it was bad when it was really my ram, that sure cost me. Since then I have bought micron exclusively and have not had one piece go bad or any compatibility issues. With prices so cheap a little more for quality is not that much.

If you happen to be building an Athlon setup, you really have to be careful about the quality of the RAM you use. Athlons are not really fond of cheapo generic RAM

Crucial RAM is about $50 now for 128MB. If your friend can't afford the $25 upgrade, maybe he's not ready to buy a computer just yet.
