Cheap Quality DVD Player

I am leaving for college very soon and I need a cheap DVD player for my TV. I am Canadian so please suggest something I can get in Canada.
I want something that can output a digital 5.1 surround signal to some Z-5500s.

Thanks.

Be careful what you wish for; cheap dvd players can get very cheap. I just purchased a Philips dvp642 because it can play almost any media, and since I own quite a bit of +r media, it works for me. And, it was only 60 bucks from circuit city, so I'm sure it can't be too expensive up north.

If you want really cheap, find a brand you've never heard of before, and try to find good reviews for it. Unknown brands are always cheaper, but unknown brands are always cheaper for a reason.

I am not sure you can find a quality digi out dvd player for $30. My Sony wasn't top of the line but did come DTS, Dolby, and THX certified, all the features of the Z-5500s. So look for that on the DVD player if you want to use your Z-5500s with it to the fullest. FYI my Sony costed $120 but $20 MIR, so $100 for it total...

Check out Hometheatersecrets DVD player roundup. Also, AVSforum, Hometheaterforum.

I've read good things about the Philips 642 dclapps mentioned.

I saw a DVD player from ncix.com last week for ~ 70cdn. It plays DIVX and other formats I can't remember the name I think it was a RJtech.

Here's another vote for the Phillips 642. Plays about anything you can throw at it.

For your purposes take a look at the Magnavox SMD124. It's about $30US at Sam's Club. It plays every DVD I've burned, including about a dozen different brands and both + and - R. Doesn't play as wide a variety of formats as the Phillips but is one heck of a DVD movie player.

Any player that does digital out nowadays will output DTS/DD. THX certification doesn't mean squat (other than that the manufacturer is paying extra to plaster that logo on the box, and that extra cost is coming right out of your pocket).
