I have an extra tower that I put together from old parts and stuff i picked up cheap. it will mainly be used for school work and enough gaming to keep my 8 year old off MY computer. it has a cheapo Kinpo motherboard an 32mb ATI Rage Fury Pro with video inputs so I can try making some video CD's and could me upgraded for video if I can get anywhere with that and have some fun. but right now it is down to a FDD,CPU and memory although I could steal 128mb from my computer if i get it that close. now comes the choice of cpu. I am currently running a cel 2 533@800 mhz and it has been very good to me as far as stability and I have tried it in the Kinpo board and it worked fine in there except that I had to run my core voltage at 1.80 because it wont post at 1.50 and the cheap board doesnt allow for adjustment as far as i could figure out so i upped the voltage with my $10 slocket to its lowest setting of 1.80. it runs good and if the bios is correct even runs cooler than in my abit board at 1.75(my normal voltage for almost a year. I want to buy a cpu from a local retailer and the choices I have been looking at are a cel 2 633 for $75 or a P3 coppermine 700E for $150. I have pc 100 memory right now but it is cheap and I could probably get some 133. both chips should clock to about 950mhz but I have never had to run my system higher than 100fsb so I think I have more confidence reaching 100 with the celeron than hitting 133 with cheap memory and no 1/4 divider for the agp. so is the P3 700E worth $75 more than the celeron value wise? what areas of improvement would I see with the extra cache and higher fsb. I know celerons get dogged pretty hard but this is a BX system where they are supposed to flourish. If I happened to get a dead chip would the 700E at 700 be any improvement over the 533@800 that Im running now. at least if the celeron was a dud I could stick it in the kids computer and run it at stock speeds and it should be more than fast enough.
I will probably buy the cel next week or wait a couple more if I go for the 700E. so basicaly if I wasnt going to get marked improvement with the P3 i want another celeron but sure would like to be close to a gig since a friend just got a 1ghz athlon and I need to keep up. right now his benchmarks way better than mine but he is having trouble running direct3d even at fairly low res considering we both have geforce 2 mx's I dont know why his doesnt run at least as good as mine I think he has some version of via chipset and may need the 4in1 drivers but I think I will just let him figure it out for himself since he considers himself some sort of guru for stringing along a 233 into 2001 sorry about the long post but it is rather late and anybody thats here now must be pretty bored anyway

Sardonic and succinct, Spamboy. You get an A
(Innoka, resist English schoolteacher comments)
PS: Celeron 950 just like P!!!800 it say on Anandtech's "overclocking the celeron."

I'd say go for the P3. The performance gains on a celeron drop dramatically since every celeron has less L2 cache than a P3. You won't see a huge performance gain in going from an 800 mhz celeron to a 950 mhz celeron.

However, you will see a pretty big one going from a Celeron 800 to a P3 950+
just because of the L2 cache.

Good luck.
