this machine is basically gonna be a web browsing and office apps machine. which budget board should i get? i figure for what i want this machine to do... i don't need an nforce, kt266a, etc. suggestions?

That'll be an all-in-one then ... have a look at PC-Chips M810LR (SiS 730S chipset, SDRAM) or M841LR (SiS 740, DDR or SDRAM). These include graphics, 4-channel sound, modem and 10/100 LAN right out of the box. 841LR is the newer and much faster product (esp. when used with DDR RAM), but for that application, who cares?

If you don't have the CPU already, you might even want to consider using a 787CLR - this one brings the CPU right on the board too (a 667 MHz VIA C3, not upgradable).

I've been configuring systems with 810LR and 787CLR for exactly that purpose for friends of mine. 787CLR is good enough, 810LR however feels noticeably faster and has more headroom.

thanx for the suggestions peter 🙂

unfortunately, i already have the cpu, which is a 700mhz duron. how is the onboard video on those pc chips boards? i dun care too much for 3d... it's all about nice, clear, crisp, and sharp 2d at 1024x768 (higher would be nice too, but not necessary). in general, how much do these board cost?

The 810's video borrows up to 64 megabytes of system RAM, is good enough for 3D fun in low resolutions, and takes you up to at least 1600x1200 in 2D, with good signal quality.

841 is much faster in 3D, can't say anything about image quality since I haven't seen one run on a good monitor yet.

Cost should be around $75 or so for the version w/ LAN, including the modem card.

compgeeks has a great deal on a chaintech kt133E boardhere. just slap a cheap vid card(like an ATI rage 128) and your good to go. there is a thread in the hot deals forum if you want more info.

M810LMR is great, but how about getting the newer DDR capable PC Chips M841LR. Still has on-board video, sound, LAN and Modem, but the video is very close supposedly to GF2 MX speeds and it has both SDR and DDR slots. It's around $65 on Pricewatch. Why not have the future DDR upgrading option if you can?
