Dang, can't get a break.

I have a question for you. How much memory have you got in your rig? I guess that if it has only 128mbram then its probably time to get some more memory. I have seen that particular error on a friends PC before. And that was on a Dell desktop with 128mb ram. I hope that helps you.

It only has 128MB of memory, but that wasn't the problem. The software install was just not "complete". I restored from the recovery CDs and everything was fine.

I am looking for deals on memory though.

Tot, where do you disappear to? Could you teach us how to make the laptop upgrade automatically without paying more money, huh?

Since you're lying about your system, I suppose those 3D Mark of 900Z you provided are all crap.

JBL PRO speakers (Awesome sound untill I broke it, gonna get a replacement from compaq.)
Nice keyboard
Nosy and hot while at full load.

Edited:

Did a couple more test and gotten a consistent. 2102 with 1024X768 at 16bit color.

Very funny. Two weeks ago you said your system is
=============================================================================================
model:900Z
CPU: 1500+XP
RAM: 256 (shared with graphic) = 192 and 224
Display: 15inch sxga
COST: $811
It also comes with DVD drive, floppy drive, 20gb hd, JBL pro speaker, 2 usb 1.1(only vibes is no fire and usb2) so you can rub that in.
=============================================================================================

and now all of a sudden it's upgraded to CPU 1800+, HD 30GB, DVD/CDRW combo ???????
You have a smart 900z which can upgrade itself without further cost. Your system is the best I've ever seen.
I guess next week your CPU would be AMD 2100+, HD 60GB, DVD/DVD-RW combo, right, Tot?

how do you check to see what your laptop is currently running at (mhz wise). Is the only way through system properties in the control panel? Also, I tried running the default test in 3dmark 2001 and it exits with some error. What did you all do to get it to work?

Edit: Just got it running and got 1563. This is with 384mb ram with 32mb to the video card. Maybe I'll update the drivers to the other one and see if that does anything.

You may change your video memory to 128 mb in the bios setting. That way you'll get some improvement.

Do you guys know how to take the hard drive out? In the manual it says we should unscrew two screws,

but actually there are no screws at the HD part. The HD in this model is Hitachi, and I heard that some other

brands like Toshiba and IBM are a lot more quiet than this one.

karnold -- check the help feature. The screws are protected by small rubber plugs . You need to remove the plugs, unscrew the screws ands then you can get to the harddrive.

Karnold:

I can tell you how I got my upgrade. Its as simple as this. Compaq send me a new laptop after I told them that I got a busted speaker. So its as simple as that. And no, I did not lie about my 3Dmark score. If anyone here with a 900Z do the same test, they will get similar result.

And I would kindly ask you to not insult me. As for where I have been, I have been in anandtech forum, I was trying to contribute to the Axim deal as well as some other deals, search for my post if you are not satisfied. BTW, I have no intention of starting a WAR here. Just be friendly, I have respected you for a long time, and not attacked you. Just so you know. Stay cool and enjoy your notebook.

And as for the harddisk just remove sticky rubber protection pad on the bottom. It covers up the screw, and you would need a Torx screw to open it up. I think it should be size ten. You can get it in walmart, I got mine at local superwalmart, for 7 bucks.

Hope that helps and also clears thing out.
Peace out.

Believe me 900Z isnt that bad if you can live with the heat issue. And I am very lucky to get those upgrades, a couple of people with the 1500T also gotten this kind of upgrade. I just got stupidly lucky to get a 1800+ chip, and also a 30GB hard drive inaddition to the combo drive.

And one more thing Karnold, I can confirm with you that the hitachi drive does have "sound" and the toshiba drive is quiet. I was in a dilemma as to keep the hitachi(30GB) or swap it out with the older 20GB toshiba.

The sound from the hitachi is clicking at times when the head parks at rest. Its quiet when its already on the disk itself reading.

Later,

Hey, anyone know what the best way to clean the keyboard and touchpad is? I hope theres an easy and safe way because I dont want to become paranoid and like wash my hands everytime before I use my keyboard. Same with dirt and other grime getting into it. Is there a way to remove the keyboard to spray compressed and or whatnot to get the stuff out?

Sorry to ressurect this thread but has anyone been able to track their rebates on www.hp.com/go/celebrate ? or has even received it by chance? I mailed mine a week and a day before THanksgiving and I am still unable to track the rebates at all on the website. I am getting worried because I have heard people received the $$$ back in like 3 weeks and stuff. Any ideas? Thanks
