The following are all hosts that have the following features:

  • High amounts of web space
    Cheap monthly or yearly fees
    PHP4 and CGI access
    Free subdomains
    High monthly transfer
    Shell access (good for configuring CGI scripts directly on the server)
    Free domain transfer and/or registration


In order of performance that I think is:

  1. Host4Ever
    Webmanix

Whoever says "unlimited transfer" obviously is lieing.

Maybe I should sign up for an account and then host files like fileplanet :)

They only accept paypal...but I know a guy who's had them for 3 months...and they're fine! Their webpage looks like crap too...but it's SUCH a hot deal that it HAS to be real!!!

High transfer could be a lie, but I've got no idea. I'm guessing they have too much bandwidth, or maybe it's just a promo, I have no idea. *shrug* yeah, fileplanet. But who would go to you're site anyway ;)

Why don't you just get there $3 a month service for one month and try it out rather than crapping :) ? Paypal gives you that much just for signing up :p

No such thing as unlimited if you're an hoset web host.
Specially when it comes to space or transfer.

Read the terms of service for these unlimited bandwidth and space hosts, for example the first site on that list above, host4ever says:

"The Company does not permit sites in the Unlimited Plan where 20% or more of the monthly traffic is from file downloads, or sites that use more than 10% of system resources"

I don't think the fileplanet idea would work :frown:

I use www.webmanixhosting.com and haven't had any problems with it for over a year now. $40/year. And just because a company offers unlimited transfer doesn't mean it's a scam. Here's the reason: most companies have a user agreement where you can't have anything controversial on your site, such as pornography, mp3s, or movie files. And if you're not distributing those things, it's very hard to generate a significant amount of traffic. Simple as that. When they see you using a lot of bandwidth, they go check what you're transferring. If it's against your agreement, you get shut down.

Careful with this, guys. I work at a hosting company, and this is a scam you're talking about. Host4ever.com's domain has only been around for a few months.. not only that, but their DNS is handled by someone else, so they're probably reselling. Plus, they require a 1 year contract. This is a popular hosting scam. It goes like this: set up a reseller hosting "company," offer super sweet deals that people can't pass up, but require 1 year contracts and "life-time" service for $100-$200, whatever. The contract states that there will be no refunds, no matter what. Then a year later or so, the site goes down because of "money problems," and they keep your money.

Don't do it. Go with a reputable hosting company. I won't list mine since people will accuse me of plugging.. so try www.brinkster.com or www.sitehosting.net .. or some other ones. Stay away from these too-good-to-be-true hosting companies.

a good place to find out if the host is worth a damn is webhostingtalk.com, in the first forum you can do a search and see what other people have used a host etc. New hosts won't be in there but if you are trying a new host you usually get better service since they are trying to build up a client base.

Has anyone used BlueSwirl? Their prices seem very similar to CyberWings'. Yes, I know that is a bad thing, but I am one of many people who need like 1 MB of space and like 10 MB of bandwidth plus one pop/webmail address. BlueSwirl could be perfect if they don't go down for weeks at a time (and probably forever) like you-know-who.

Don't sign up with anyone that doesn't give shell access, 24/7 tech support 1-800 #, and a 30 day money back gaurantee. Given that, I'd suggest www.jtlnet.com. Been rock solid for moi.

That's absurd. What if the hosting company doesn't have UNIX machines? Win2000 "shells" might be possible, but pose a big security risk. And some hosting companies are highly reliable but don't have people staffed 24/7. The hosting company I work for doesn't have 24/7 tech support.. does that mean people shouldn't sign up with us? You gotta look at the big picture. Our network is solid, and hasn't gone down even once.. we can't afford to, because we host some database solutions for MCI. And I just asked my boss, we do offer shell accounts for our UNIX hosts. We'll also pricematch, within reason.

PS: JTLNet's prices are ridiculous, for what you get. And I'm being objective & honest here. At JTLNet, $7.95/mo gets you 10MB on UNIX... we give you 50MB for $8.95/mo, no setup fees.

Yes, I have used Blue Swirl. You place the container in the water storage tank and when you flush you see a marvelous blue swirl as evrything gets sucked down the toilet. :p What an unfortunate name for a hosting company.
