Where (online or elsewhere) can I buy cheap home audio equipment - dolby surround, speakers, etc.? I'm a college student looking to furnish an apartment, so I'd also appreciate any advice on finding very cheap furniture. Thanks a million.

Please give us a dollar amount...if you have less than $1000 to spend on audio equipment, you'll need to build some stuff yourself if you want decent sound.

scour classifieds and bulletinboards around your school... there are always ppl getting rid of good furniture in college towns.. as for the audio system, just buy it piece by piece where you can find the best deals.. i bought mine from ebay and here and it took me about a year to complete everything...

???? Not!!!

Check out the Panasonic SC-HT80 home theater system. For under $700, you get a 5-disc DVD/CD changer, dolby digital surround, a radio tuner, plus 3 aux inputs for connecting your cable/satelite, vcr, and aux to. Sounds awesome too!

Try here for a great deal on speakers.

If you want some cheap furniture, your best bet is always local classifieds ads. Another good lead is to go to Sears. They sell Sauder furniture - which is the finest particle board money can buy. I got a very nice entertainment center for $175 and a desk for <$300. This is particle board, but until you ding a corner, it is really nice....

Thanks for the replies. I can't spend nearly $1000 on audio equipment - I would call myself neither an audiophile nor rich, and I still have the entire apartment to furnish. I'm basically looking for whatever the sweetest deals are on used, refurb, or extremely marked-down products. Also, how old is too old? One of my apartment-mates might be able to get a 10 year old HK receiver, but will that be at all decent? I'm also looking for good deals on TV's, if anyone has any suggestions.

If you're handy DIY is the way to go. Find a guy with a woodshop and make him your best friend. You can build some decent speakers, subwoofer, and a flexy rack to hold your equipment for under a grand.

I own it and it rocks. You don't need a large driver in a good bandpass enclosure in order for it to be loud. Look at bose. Most of their drivers are under 7"

Yeah man, look at Bose. Their stuff rocks. Nobody makes crappy cardboard cones sound as good as Bose!

You have just lost every ounce of credibility that you had....GOODBYE!

Edit: My z-560s probably sound better than that system :Q
You could easily build a HTPC and buy some z-560s for that price...but that's still not a good idea ;) (5.1 is your friend for DVDs)

Hey thread starter (i'm editing my post so i can't see your username) what's your budget for your audio system? I strongly recommend starting out with a good receiver and only two speakers, then adding a sub + surround speakers when you can afford them more. Don't buy a half-assed "home theater in a box" POS crap.

well that doesnt matter, you lost your's the first time your snobbish ass tried to be viperoni. YOu dont need to drop 1K (on audio alone!?!) to have decent sound. Forget what this crackhead is saying. I would recommend PMing someone who does know what they are talking about (viperoni) and ask him to participate in this thread.

Under 1k (edit, that's a bit high, maybe 700 is a better estimate) isn't going to get you that good of a home theater system (receiver, and 5 speakers + sub) in the retail marker...you can probably drop a few hundred and DIY for better sound...

If you are serious about getting a bang for the buck type of budget system, stay the F away from an all-in-one. If nothing else, the sub-woofer will be dreadful. If you really want to keep it cheap, but want to get the most out of your DVDs, try matching this receiver with these speakers (I recommend splurging for a second sub). Then go to your local Best Buy or Circuit City and buy a $100 Panasonic DVD player. For a little over $500 you will have a system that wil put ANY all-in-one system to shame.

budget receiver
If you are on a budget, I'd recommend that receiver, and DIY speakers (DIY owns you :)) If you want to go DIY, PM Viperoni and ask him to get in this thread ;) He knows more than I do.
DIY speaker cable :)
http://members.rogers.com/viperoni/Audio/My15DVC/index.html <-- Viperoni's KICK ASS DIY Subwoofer...you WILL knock things down if they aren't fastened down :) I am so jealous of viperoni's sub ;)

Edit: Mwilding got it right..."Home theater in a box" systems SUCK ASS
