Cheap Dell Laptop

My 10 year old son wants a Laptop for xmas. Dell is currently running a special on the B130 for $499 with 15.4 in screen, 1GB ram, 60gb HD, and dual layer burner.

This is a lot cheaper than the other Inspiron Models. Any downside to the B series other than the celeron processor and 2 hour battery?

The integrated video will be fine for his needs.

Thanks,

Not that I can think of.

Personally, and no offense is meant towards yourself, but I don't know if getting a laptop for a 10 year old is a good idea. They may be more likely to drop it and beyond that, I would want my hypothetical 10 year old to use the computer in a fixed location where I would be able to see the screen every now and again.

i saw the b130 at a dell kiosk a couple months ago and it was fugly as hell. i'm not sure it matters for your son but that's one factor for me when deciding on a laptop.

i would consider some compaq laptops (V3000 and V6000 series) or going with an older laptop, seeing how his power requirements won't be too high. a ibm/lenovo thinkpad or dell latitude may be better suited for him. they're business class laptops, made sturdier and more reliable. Brainonska is right (and this is nothing against your son, just a generalization of 10-year-old boys), boys your son's age aren't really the most careful people.

i know there's going to be a few sub-$500 laptops out for black friday. i would look into some of those deals and see if any of them are suitable. if it doesn't come with enough ram, you can always add more so i wouldn't keep 512mb from hindering your decision to buy

The only thing I did on the computer when I was 10 was play Starcraft and surf the web. Unless he doesn't have access to a computer, what does he need one for?

He's pretty sharp, he's learning basic and html. He wants to learn java too. He now share's the "family" PC with his 3 younger siblings.

Nice! I didn't get a chance to learn that sh!t unitl sophomore year in HS. Just remember that a 13 year old made the ILoveU virus in BASIC IIRC 😉
