So I subscribe to Clark Howard newsletter, and today I got one that had a profile of the Asus EeePC. This is a small notebook with lots of built in features for a cheap price. It runs Linux on an Intel Platform, and is intended for cheap, basic computing including email, web, multimedia, and office processing. They have 802.11G built in. Right now these go for as high as $399 (4 models are available), which is too much. But, the target price is $200 which is expected to be reached in 2008 as more units are shipped.
The EeePC is pretty much sold out at the moment. I think this is a great idea and if they can get it down to $200, I would buy one and discard the full service laptop because I don't need all that stuff on the run, and it is heavier. I could keep my desktop at home for the other stuff I do. Great idea and should help people with less $$ get into computing, especially on Linux if they choose to get into the nuts and bolts.
