Cheap CD-RW as good as Plextor?

good question! I posted something earlier about that software to see what people's opinions are...check out that thread. They have a 10 day free trial at their website you could check out too. [L=]http://www.nticdmaker.com[/L]

I just got my Plextor 12/10/32 SCSI with a 4 meg buffer and LOVE it. I also bought a 32x Ultraplex off of E-bay. Plextor makes the best Optical media drives I have ever owned. They are whisper quiet and very fast. I won't buy a non-Plextor product again.

I called up tech support for Imation, I have the 12x8x32 drive, and they told me that adactec 4x supports burnproof technology. Where did you get the info about adaptec 4x not supporting burnproof? My buffer goes right down to 1%, yet it keeps right on going until finished.

I called Adaptec. They said themselves only Adaptec 5.0 deluxe supports burn proof. It has also been mentioned on this website before too.

What would be the sense of these cd-rw companies selling "burnproof" if, in reality, it's not burnproof unless you go out and buy new software? Isn't that false advertising?

On the Acer site, they say the drive itself senses the approaching underrun and stops burning until the buffer is full again. Here's the link. http://www.acercm.com/news/seamless_link.html

It should be a transparent operation, hence no enabling in software.

Get the aopen 1232a, excellent drive I am guessing from the reviews even though I dont have it, I have a rebadged plextor, tdk velocd i like the way it looks better. I would rather go with the aopen than the others for the price.

Acer is the only CD-RW 1208A with seamless link that does not require software to use the it. While ALL the other companies you need software for the burnproof to work.
Its not really false advertising. Its just saying the drive has the ability to be burnproof. But without the software to support it it will not work. Unless of course you have the Acer 1208A with seamless link. And not all 1208A drives have seamless link, only those marked on the box. Supposedly the new Imation is a re-badged Acer 1208A with Burnproof. But Burnproof is a copyright name and Imation uses the name "burnproof" on their packaging. So I don't believe the Imation is an Acer since they use their technology called "seamless link".

he is giving his opinion on the two choices you offered up about 10-12 replies ago...I agree...look at lite-ons track record as well as the complaints of creative products as well...

Aopen is the route to go...justlink...goto ricohs site and read about it, very interesting...

PLus with the aopen I got nero 5.0 with a free website upgrade when 5.5 came out...

Thanks for all the info 14fritz. When I called Imation about my 12x8x32 drive, I was told it's a rebadged Acer 1208A. The model number is 1208A-062. The box actually says "No Buffer Under Run", but doesn't say how. Must be seamless link like you said.

The manual has little tips and tricks you can use to prevent underruns. Why, if it has the technology to make that a thing of the past, would they offer this info? It's not easy to be up on all this stuff when companies play these games with it's customers. That's why I have Max Confusion! 😕

Burn-Proof is over rated. You can still create coasters using it. Gosh, you make like burn-proof is god or something. It's just something that MIGHT save you a cd-r. But cd-r's are so cheap it doesn't matter anyway. Get the Lite-On from Newegg. You don't need Burn-Proof. 🙁

I must say that after looking more at the reviews about the Lite-On it is tough not to give it a try. If I keep saying to myself spend the extra $15..spend the extra $15....I will be up to buying a Plextor 16x10x40. The CD-RW I have now 4x2x? is junk...I average 2 bad cd-r's for every good one. It doesn't work with drop&drag files any more and the CD's I did create can no longer read. I went el'cheap'o and got what I paid for. I just want to avoid that again. Everyone makes valid points for Lite-On, Creative Labs, Teac, and Aopen. I have a feeling I will reorder the Lite-On in the morning...wish me luck or change my mind by then.

Thanks to everyone!
