<< The one I received was in a box saying ECS Thundering Sound 5.1. Tried looking all over the esc site and could never find any sound card listed nor any drivers. Naturally they never answer emails. >>

The ECS sound card is listed on their PCware.com website HERE. You can also find drivers on this site.

This soundcard does not suck cpu usage. If you call between 0-5% sucking too much then so be it. :D

Marlin,

I use xp with it and it works fine. But my speakeres are not 5.1.

That one at compgeeks isn't the same one.

I have this card--great card. It uses between 1-3% cpu. That 3% is tops. That is hardly a hit on your processor.

Look I have a Aureal One sound card should I upgrade to this card? I don't really want to spend to much money.

Any info on EAX support? I've heard of some cheaper cards that support EAX having 'issues'..
Heck, it's only 20 bucks, I might buy one anyway. Better than my dern onboard MSI sound :p

I have christmas money to spend, but I'm wondering if this card would be worth it to me. I'm currently using my onboard Epox 8k7a sound card (whatever it is), and everything sounds fine to me. I have old yamaha speakers from my compaq from 1995, and I use headphones 75% of the time I"m on my computer. So is it actually worth it for me to buy a new soundcard, cuz if not i'd really rather have another nautica shirt from Macy's :)

It does have eax support dK9 ;) No conflicts at all on my shuttle ak 31, tbird 1.4 and running xp. And RonType, my 0-5% cpu usage is on this tbird 1.4.

Braves, trust me. This is eons better that the 9k7a onboard sound. ;) Here you get true 5.1 support.

I have Iwill kk266plus mobo and use Windows ME. I like the sound playback quality but I have a problem with its microphone line.
The microphone volume is simply too low even with microphone booster option on in the sound control panel.

I had no problem using dialpad.com with SBlive value... does anyone know how to fix the microphone volume in KK266?

I have a Chaintech 512 which has 6 channel output Cmedia 8738 chip running fine in Win XP. Sounds very nice and seems like quite a bargain compared against all other cards. It is a very underrated card. What are you all using to check CPU usage?

here is one review of the chipset (guillemot card). I think other reviews of this card showed the same thing.. this is the one i found offhand. They were basing cpu usage when using directsound3d. but for the price, it seems like a decent card.

Just a quick point of info, for those of you bearing your 'high CPU Utilization' figures from reviews of the Hercules Muse sound card with the CMI chip or any other soundcards that used the CMI8738/PCI chipset, you're not comparing 'apples to apples.' That version of the chipset is now fairly dated, and for the most part, all of its issues (specifically, CPU utilization) have been remedied. In fact, the CPU usage was close to nothing on both an Athlon XP 1700+ and Athlon XP 1900+ system I tested on. That really shouldn't be your concern to be completely honest, unless you have a sub 500MHz processor or so. Just for future reference, the latest revision of the CMI8738 is the CMI8738/PCI-6CH-MX (6 Channel soundcard with S/PDIF support)

Also, as far as drivers are concerned, thankfully, Microsoft seems to recognize C-Media (CMI) as being 'worthy' of having their driver updates at the WindowsUpdate site. Translation = you can expect to find basic, latest drivers for the C-Media cards at the WindowsUpdate website. Better yet, visit CMI and download the drivers for yourself including the additional 'Audio Rack' software. The drivers are fairly robust, and extremely versatile supporting Microsoft Windows 9x/Me, Windows XP, Windows 2000, Linux, and BeOS. For the gamers out there, this card fully supports EAX. In fact, C-Media released new beta drivers for Microsoft operating systems YESTERDAY! So if you're freaking about a possible lack of support, CMI is just as reliable as any other PC company.

Under Windows XP, you can use the analog 5.1 output, complete with separate volume control sliders for each channel. If your card comes with the S/PDIF output built onto the backplane, you can rest assured that the feature will be used under Windows XP (assuming you have a speaker system that makes use of these connectors). For the most part, as long as the soundcard uses the CMI8738/PCI-6CH-MX chip, if the card does not feature the S/PDIF output you require, you can pick up an additional backplane complete with TOSLINK In, TOSLINK Out, RCA Optical In, RCA Optical Out, 1 Rear Speaker Jack, and 1 Center/Subwoofer channel jack for $20 or so. Sure, you'll lose the 'value' part of this solution, however, with all these added inputs/outputs you'll easily have the most feature filled soundcard toda for under $35 or so.

All in all, I'm pleased by the solution, and definitely think it is worth the money. It is just as competitive as any Creative offering, without many of the conflicts Creative brings to the table, especially when used with extremely common VIA-based motherboards.

Peace

Store4PC.com - (be careful, it's a yahoo store) has the same thing (I think) for a little less...

Dolby Digital 5.1 Channel Live Theater PCI Sound Card 14.99
Shipping (USPS) 6.95
Tax 0.90
Total for Store4PC.com 22.84

The total for me at SavingXoom was 24.95, so it shaves another $2 off.

Please double check me to make sure that it's the same product.

Has anyone ordered through Store4PC.com before? What a goofy store name.

Yet another cheap, solid, sound card link. I've been using this item for over a year now, and it's been nothing but fantastic. No glitches, hardware conflicts, monthly menstrual cycles, etc...
For $21 shipped (plus about $1 tax in CA) this is an exceptional deal.:D

Just installed the Beta drivers with my Chaintech card and it corrected a bug for me. Couldn't get my TV card to work without selecting 2 channel sound and then switching back to 4 channel. All works fine now and my gameport works.

BTW if anyone is looking for a card like this I have an extra new in box Chaintech 512 (6 channel) for $20 shipped...

New drivers again! Not bad, their last driver update was in November of this year. I am impressed. Creative was never like this.

Stevem, do you use XP? If so right click on the task bar then left click on task manager. Click on the performance tab and there ya go. ;)

Looks like a great card for the $. Can someone explain the SPDIF in/out support that blade listed in the specs?
Is this another jack that one could see in a pic, or is it a protocol of some sort.
