So my friend needs me to piece together a PC for her. Around 400 bucks.

She already has all the optical drives and such, so this is what I'm thinking...

XP2800+/ECS N2U400-A Ultra 400 -> $119.00 Fry's Combo
512MB Corsair PC3200 -> $ 82.00 Newegg
Antec SLK3700-BEQ -> $ 92.00 Newegg
WD 120GB 7200RPM, 8MB Buff -> $ 79.99 - 30.00 Rebate, Fry's

She has all the optical drives - what do you think?

I have the option of doing this for the CPU/mobo.
P4 2.40A ESL7E8 / ECS 848P-A -> $ 99.00 Fry's Combo

And, I need a suggestion for a cheap gfx card, no gaming. I'm thinking something in the range of a Ti4200. Links and price suggestions plz!

What do you all think? I don't see much better deals with the processors, especially with a free, stable? ECS boards for practically free. Let me know!

Would you go the P4 or Intel route? No OCing of course, just need a STABLE rig.

If you're not o/cing, get the Athlon XP rig.

But I just picked up the 2.4A combo last night, and I'm rockin rolling at 3GHz at 1.4v, idles at 39C, load at 50C using a Zalman 7000.

sounds good - any suggestions on a cheap gfx card? or good small HD deals? that 120gb may be overkill, and might put me above budget.

it's always possible to wait - which i think i might do. there's not any good prices on ram right now - nor any really good deals on HDs.

bad gfx cards aren't even cheap - usually in the 60-70 dollar range for a GF5200 or R9200.

Get a cheap gfx card from Newegg Refurb. I've scored $30 9200s and $50 Ti4200s.

you might want to consider integrated graphics if you don't plan to play any high end 3d games. Integrated graphics are more than sufficient for 2d games. You might want to consider antec's mid tower. I thatnk it's called Antec SQ2650. It's only $65ish + $15 shipping at newegg
