Ok so i am trying to reduce cost as much as possible. I am considering a G2020 ivy bridge or a athlon x4 750k for gaming. 750k is $10 more. i know its not much but 10 matters. performance wise what is the better option?

In this price range, I would go with the Athlon. Despite what others say, I think the i3 with hyperthreading is still a decent cpu for gaming, but I would not want to go to a dual core without hyperthreading.

Nobody should be considering dual core for gaming anymore. The Athlon is the better only choice.

so people using an i3 for gaming is out of date?

It performs relatively poorly in some new games, but overall is still adequate. Strange that so many AMD fans are trying to promote APUs as adequate gaming solutions and call the i3 inadequate while an i3 with a HD7770 will devastate any igp using the igp only.

The i3 dual core + HT (4 thread) is minimum for gaming on Intel side, and dual module/quad core (4 thread) is minimum for AMD.

This doesn't even considering the stutter, so don't let anyone talk you into wasting your money on a Pentium.
