My current card in my linux machine is dying(a GeForce2, using the legacy drivers), and shows banding/ghosting artifacts. It's time to upgrade, but I'm looking at something cheap (the PC itself is an Athlon XP)
I use my linux machine as a server, although I occasionally play games or watch movies on it, so I want *some* hardware acceleration.
I have had good luck with NVIDIA cards in the past, so I think I would prefer to stick with NVIDIA.
Since the machine is on 24/7/365, I think passively cooled would be best, since I won't have to worry about a fan wearing out, and it will be less noise.

So far, my top contenders are http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814150107 and http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814133236

honestly I can't quite tell what the differences are. ine says OpenGL 1.5 the other one 2.0, but one is vista certified, the other is not? what is HDT/S-Video? the same as S-Video?

Athird one on newegg is: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814500051 though I don't know what a 6200A means.

The 6200 seems to be the sweet spot for the sub-$50 range, and seems to be easy to find fanless.
Any other good place to shop for video cards? Can I get more performance for $50?

Thanks

an additional question: the mobo (AK35GT2R) says it supports AGP 4x and both 1.5V and 3.3V. I assume that any of those cards, even the ones marked 8x will work?

Yes, 4x will just limit the bandwidth which will limit the video card's performance somewhat.
As for the video card itself, get this 3450 because it has full hardware acceleration and should be way faster than a 6200. They are both low end but the 3450 is 3 generations newer so it should be much faster..

Yes, AGP is backwards compatible with itself.

I would also recommend you get something a bit more powerful than a 6200, even if you have to get a fan. I used to keep my computer on 24/7 over a 3 year period and the GPU fan has not failed. But I use a 6200 regularly, and it lags in Counter-Strike, especially when someone throws a smoke grenade. I recommend going on eBay (or whatever site you find) and getting a card such as the following: Geforce 6600 GT, Geforce 6800 series, Geforce 7600 series, Geforce 7300GT, Radeon X1600 series, Radeon HD2600 series, Radeon HD3600 series, or Radeon X1300XT. Here are some cards I found:

X1600 Pro - $44

X1650 Pro - $51

I believe the X1650 uses less power than the X1600, and they should be a good match for an Athlon XP system.
