easy. you buy a voucher, which gives you a voucher number. When you register for a test and they ask you to pay, you can either pay by CC or give them a voucher number.

techexams.net is a good place to look into certs and vouchers.

plastick, this link is also where I get my vouchers. Just pay for a voucher, and they email you the voucher number, and from there, just follow my previous post.

oh yeah, and I think you have to buy a voucher specific to the testing company you want to use. I recommend VUE.

do you still need to take software part or can you just be A+ certified hardware? what software does it test you on like DOS???

I don't think they seperate. You really need to pass both to be considered A+. Of course you can say you passed A+ hardware, but consider that incomplete. Essentially, the scope of the exam was to broad for a single test and a single sitting. I also know that after you pass one of the tests, Comptia says they won't mail you any certification information until you pass the other.
 
I took hardware and OS about 10 days apart. I'm glad I did, I needed the time between to switch gears. Also it's a lot less intimidating to know you only have to take 1 test when you go into the testing center that day.

Plow through A+ then you can take Network + which is only 1 test and I think actually easier than A+

I just was getting ready to schedule my Network+ exam before they retired it tomorrow. Saved myself about $70.

Went ahead and grabbed the vouchers for A+ while I was at it.

Thanks guys, you have been tons of help.

And I have been studying tutorials and especially some cd's that came with my college books...they are A+ certification prep cd's so I assume they have almost the same questions as the ones on the actual exam.. but as I go through it, i see that they are asking really technical questions like: "when troubleshooting a problem with your computer, the technitician told you that the current parallel port setting is causing a DMA conflict. Based on that diagnosis, what must be the parallel ports current CMOS setting? SPP, EPP, ECP, or Bi-Directional?"

good lord i dont know that one at all.. seems a lot are so abstractly deep and all over the place that i am starting to think that maybe i should just can the idea of taking these tests and just go work in the woods 🙁:brokenheart:..

lol, i guess this is why i say the people that say one should just get drunk and go in and take the test are fools. study your practice tests, take notes, and go through whats on these two sites for A+

i dont remember where it was said, but i have heard from various people on this forum things that give me the impression that just having a bachelors degree in pc networking is not very effective in getting a networking job, and that one needs to have A+ and net+ certifications for one to get concidered for a job. Is this really true in many networking admin job positions?

Most people probably can't get those in 3 years nevermind 6 months. And if they do get them in 6 months, they are using brain dumps or just study the answers from TK.
 
for A+, I would advise NOT getting the Exam Cram book, that's the book I bought and it didn't help much. There's a book by Myers that people recommend. You can get a lot of the study materials for free from mcmsce.com they have a great study guide there.

I had experience, read some books, used some cram sheets and studied alot. Yea, so 6 months is really pushing it on getting all those certs, but if someone really wanted them, they could study a few hours a night and do it.
 
yea, the mike meyers A+ bible. I used study guides and such, and referenced that book when I needed to elaborate on a topic.
 
Now im asking those of you with experience and knowledge how important tech certifications actually are to get an average pc networking job. Im talking maybe a first networking job out of college.. i have never had tech job before *cries*
