cheap 5.1 reciever for bedroom?

I picked up the Onkyo S3300 for my bedroom and love it. It's more expensive than that sony, but it decodes all the new audio standards, and comes with speakers.
 
you could look around for a refurb onkyo or denon or heck any brand really. Would be able to either a.) a cheap entry model or B.) a "lower mid" range for the same price as the low end sony.

For example you could get a onkyo Tx-SR307 5.1 receiver for $130 refurbed (vs $200+). Or you could get onkyo TX-508 for $179 vs 250+ Just an option. They do come with 1 year warrenties so still have the warranty protection.

Worth tossing out there. Im not expert so thats all the advice i can give lol
 
I was just looking at that Sony at Fry's yesterday. Funny I should come across this thread. It looks like it would be a good inexpensive option for the bedroom. I might go this route myself in the future, as I'd like to have everything running through HDMI. My non-HDMI HK will have to do for right now though.

With that being said, being an owner of a Pioneer Elite receiver, I wouldn't buy the Sony without at least considering the Pioneer VSX-520-K first. Looks like a great unit, has great reviews & is $20 less w/ free S&H. Actually, I'd opt for the Pioneer, personally.

I don't disagree that those are great products, but the OP & I both said cheap, so I pointed to the best sub $200 name brand receivers I could find. Onkyo & Denon start at $250.
 
Hit up craigslist. I found a basic 5.1 sony receiver with speakers and powered sub for $50 for my bedroom system.
 
There are some incredible deals out there now on used equipment, because people upgrade to receivers with HDMI switching.
 
Avoid Sony like the plague. They have absolutely the worst amp sections of any major manufacturer I know of (Haman Kardon, Pioneer, Denon, Yamaha, Marantz, etc). I've had the (unfortunate) experience of owning 2 of their receivers.

Sony compensates for their small amp sections by using a lot of voltage gain. Unfortunately their pre-amp sections are very low quality and any quiet passages that you turn up will be dominated by speaker hiss.
