im going to build a cheap comp for a friend and he really wants an LCD because it'll be easier for him in his apartment. is there anything good for like $200 or less? i dont know if he wants it for gaming or not but are there any good LCD's under $200 that will work ok for gaming if he needs that?

CompUSA usually has some 17" LCD on sale for ~$200 every week (with or without rebates). That might be good cause you have a B&M store for returns/exchanges if you get a crappy monitor with dead pixels or something.

A cheap 17" LCD will likely be a TN panel, so it should be sufficient fast for gaming needs, although it won't look as good as an IPS panel.

TN? IPS? 😕

TN: cheap old technology, cheap and fast, but bad viewing angles and bad contrast (horrible for movie watching). There are more expensive TNs too I believe, designed for gaming.

IPS: best LCD panel imho, faster than PVA, better color and viewing angle than TN
