Correa told local media by phone that police protesters were hunting for him in the building

...

"President Correa has said that there are people trying to get in from the roof and attack him," Patino told a large crowd outside the presidential palace.

....

he earlier confronted police demonstrating at the planned budget cuts and challenged them: "Kill me if you want to. Kill me if you have the courage."

...
Venezuela's government said Correa spoke to Chavez by telephone from the Quito hospital and that Correa had confirmed that the unrest was a coup attempt against him.

Background on the guy:

Correa, a socialist ally of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, said his rivals were plotting a coup against him, and that he and his wife were stunned by an exploding tear gas canister as he tried to speak to demonstrators.
...
Correa, a U.S.-trained economist, was first elected in 2006 promising a "citizens' revolution" aimed at increasing state control of Ecuador's natural resources and fighting what he calls the country's corrupt elite.
...
His government alienated international capital markets when it defaulted on $3.2 billion in global bonds two years ago. Correa declared the debt "illegitimate."
...
After taking power, Correa backed the rewriting of the constitution to tilt the balance of power toward the executive.

Not sure what Chavez can do to help him if the coup succeeds, as Ecuador does not border Venezuela. Regardless, looks like that country's government will be done in the next few days. No idea what comes next. But, I am sure the oil will flow. Surprised no one is blaming the United States for this yet.

Hopefully, Ecuador will come out of this with a better leader.

So the leadder states that there is a coup. How about he is afraid because of the riots. Or has he lost control/trust of the government/people?

the coup is from police, the president has a total control of the military before and after the revolt Schadenfroh doesn't know what is talking about.

Having control of the military doesn't mean anything.
Ecuador has history of political instability before Correa, cycling through eight presidents in a decade before the leftist U.S.-trained economist first won election in December 2006. Three of them were driven from office by street protests that plagued the country.

If you have never noticed the European and US media will do anything they can to discredit movements involving local natives instead of the elites in the pockets of the imperialists who are still trying to use SA as a feeding trough as they have for past century or so. The spice must flow.
the media was very quick to jump on the coup bandwagon in honduras last year. have they really changed that much? no. correa has nothing but his own claim.

I don't know much about Ecuador but I know their police have taken their president hostage due to his disagreement with them on pay in the past (ten years ago). Disagree with his domestic policies or not, if this is a repeat of the same that's obviously completely unacceptable, even if he wasn't in any real danger.
