Hiya,
have just set up a LAN at home - and a few are different rooms. Just what the best (free) chat software is?
Just a dead simple - starts on boot - is hidden - flashes when a chat is launched - type thing would be ok.
Also - howsa bout voice chat over it ? especially if i can run games beside it ?
Any ideas????

Cheers people.

Try AIM, also theres a pretty simple prog that only allows text chat in win98 called WinPopup and its built in. Just goto run and type winpopup.

If you just need to make quick messages on the desktop just use the 'net send <userid>' command. Works great, no resident program needed and it opens a window for the incoming message you can't miss.

Oh forgot.. am not sure wheter this works for Win9x. In NT it's great 🙂

Actually NT has tons of these great options and functionalities that one never doesn't find but looks for 3rd party solution.

For example someone was looking for commercial program for running scheduled workstation up/down check. I just whipped a small .bat together which basically said 'ping -a xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx >>log.txt'(+some stuff to generate a report about machines that are down) and ran it with AT-command .. The dude was amazed, too bad I didn't get a part for the money reserved for the software 🙂

I'm going to add to this question:

How about VIDEO CHAT over an LAN???
Must be quick & easy to use. I would like to hit a button & instantly video-conference w/ someone in another room w/ webcams.

...my what a world we live in. 😛 No longer do we have to shout up the stairs to our loved ones; now we can video-conference from room-to-room.

Yeah, it's pathetic, but how do I do it?

You can't just use netmeeting for that?

I thought that you could just put in the IP number and it would connect.

Yeah, if i didn't live in a small condo I might look at setting up something similar for kicks 😀.
