In my lifetime The American dream went from a one income wage earner owning a nice house to raise their families to a two income couple living in a minimalist tiny house with a pet to keep from being crushed by debt and being a slave to the 1%.

lol, dummy. what the fuck was Bannon/Trump's "American Horror!" Inauguration propaganda about, then?

The entire purpose of the contemporary GOP is to terrify the American people into thinking the US is a crime-ridden hellhole of abortion moms and blackies on welfare. It's in the fucking party charter, ffs.
For real, the entirety of Republican propaganda for decades has been talking points about how America is supposedly falling to shit, due to supposedly skyrocketing crime, lack of law and order, loss of family values, immigrants stealing all the jobs, loss of Constitutional rights, the 'browning' of America, etc etc.
But now, with their corrupt President finally facing some accountability for his actions, and in an uphill battle for re-election, they're trying to rewrite history and claim it's the liberals who were always the pessimists.
What a fucking joke.

Liberals made it seem like the sky would be falling today if Trump won, it was part of their FUD to try and keep him out of the Whitehouse. Well, he won, they are faced with two options today, admit that things aren't bad with Trump in office or double down on their FUD and invent a world where everything is terrible and keep telling themselves that. Guess which path they took?
Dude nothing has changed for the better with Trump in office!! Hows the Kool Aid?

Just thought i'd post this article that really should make everyone that reads it a little bit happier and more satisfied with life as we know it here on this world.

From poverty to clean water to life expectancy to war deaths to pollution to literacy rates etc. etc. etc. Things are getting better and we live in an improving world.
You didnn`t even read the article! This is an artcle about whole world. not the United!! In fact some of those charts actually state the US was not factored in....rofl........can we say -- Bang!! Shot yourself in the foot again!!

I asked my Grandmother one time how it was to ride a horse to get anyplace before automobiles were invented. She looked at me with shock and said "only rich people got to ride horses, when we wanted to go someplace we walked"

lets see you posted the article to show the poor and needy Americans how good the world is outside of the UDA? Probably not....
So you posted the article to somehow make it look like Trump is responsible for the rest of the worlds success? Now that is funny!!!
ok, so explain why a dumb fuck like you would post this article?? Hurry the popcorn is getting cold!!

This doesn't seem like enough charts. Can you link to more? I really feel like I have been chintzed on the charts.

I agreed with this comment on Pinker, incidentally (I know the thread wasn't about him, but this optimism-with-an-ulterior-motive stuff is exactly what makes him irritating).

(And this was before his friendship with Epstein became known. I assume he's now explaining how sexually-exploited children are better off today than they were in medieval times.)

Nice of the Federalist to update Vox's article, originally from 2014, most recently updated in 2018:

Some of that is absolutely valid, some things do get better, there is such a thing as progress. But some of those stats seem rather selective. For example, the cost of food as a share of disposable income in the US is down, but I notice they don't mention healthcare which has increased in cost as a share of income. Food costs could also start going up again, due to climate change. The crime figures only really show the drop from the mysterious and unusually high levels (across most of the developed world) that occured in the '90s. Which might be down to the removal of lead in petrol. An improvement since the '90s is not really a long-term trend. Obviously there are co-existing counterveiling trends (some things get better while other things get worse), and there's always the problem that things can get better right up to the moment when they suddenly get a lot worse.

Speaking of Trump..... haha
I do give Trump this, that he appears not to be a warmonger.... so far at least.
Trump must be under great pressure to become a warmonger, however Trump's personality defects may prove a benefit to him and to all of us when it comes down to warmongering.
I think war is something Donald Trump isn't sure he could handle, nor the criticism it brings.
I think Donald Trump probably feels he's too dumb to be a warmonger. And thats good for us.
Still.... as for a "better world" goes, Trump has created a lot of instability that "could" lead us to a world war three.
Kin Jong is still firing missiles as Trump writes love letter to Kim.
Putin has our elections right where Putin want them.
Iran is back to producing nukes.
All it would take is one major misunderstanding between any two superpowers, and the creation of an unholy alliance between two not so super superpowers to spin the world into total chaos.
Donald Trump is no JFK, thats for sure..... If any superpower or not so super superpower installed nukes at our doorstep, I would never trust Donald Trump to know how to handle it. Or have the ability to make the right decisions. Or to even have the intelligence to know who to listen to and who to not listen to for advice. In short, I think Trump would screw it up royally and drag the entire world into a WWIII.
Having the smarts to maneuver through a predicament like that is definitely above Trump's pay level.

Agreed - he clearly isn't in the same mould as Dubya (or even Hillary, to be honest), when it comes to classic imperial aggression. But, as you say, his flawed personality could lead to trouble anyway, maybe even worse trouble, especially given the nature of some of those trying to influence and manipulate him.

It's interesting that there are so many different routes to disaster, and so many significantly-different ideologies and factional interests, which are all nevertheless potentially dangerous.

Edit - that's the trouble with the whole 'bothsides' thing - there are just a lot more than two sides. There are multiple sides - and most of them are bad!

It still remains that life is measurably better now, than it was in the fairly recent (1990's) past. I see no reason why costs of health care or even higher education can't easily be lowered to more accessible levels. Why should Colleges cost $40,000 to $50,000 per year and why can't the most expensive Universities drastically lower costs?
