http://www.latimes.com/business/laz...m-internet-speeds-lawsuit-20170207-story.html

The lawsuit alleges that since 2012, Time Warner Cable promised Internet subscribers a “fast, reliable connection,” but customers were “dramatically shortchanged on both speed and reliability.” A 16-month investigation found that wired Internet speeds were up to 70% slower than advertised, while Wi-Fi speeds were as much as 80% slower.

The complaint is based on “internal corporate communications and hundreds of thousands of subscriber speed tests.” It alleges that “Spectrum-TWC executives knew that the company’s hardware and network were incapable of achieving the speeds promised to subscribers, but nevertheless continued to make false representations about speed and reliability.”

For example, the suit says the company leased “to a large number of its subscribers older-generation modems and wireless routers that it knew were incapable of achieving the promised Internet speeds.” It also allegedly failed to make network improvements that could have boosted customers’ Internet access.

crooks I tell ya. What has your experience been? Do all companies do this? Who are the honest ones?

If you sit around all day either pirating or running speed tests, yeah you're going to have issue.

Did my Netflix stream without issue? OK then who cares.

Then again I'm always looking for the cheapest internet I can get. Really wish any of my providers would do $25 25/5 but they know that speed really doesn't matter to anyone except pirates so $50 is the bottom price around here on any provider unless you pick up a deal.

IMO, title is wrong, it should say Time Warner Cable (now Spectrum)...

But, anyway, this goes on all the time, which is why the local boards are a bunch of corrupt shills, and don't allow real competition to take place.

Awesome! Now when are they going to hold their feet to the fire over these stupid 'required' cable boxes needed for every tv?!??!?

It's that bad. I'm on Spectrum (TWC). It sort of looked like things were slowly turning around with what the telecoms could get away with with the FCC staring to crack down. But Trump neutered that right in the bud.

This is only tangentially related to the original question, but I find it interesting that Spectrum broadband and Time Warner (now Spectrum) broadband are different services. My neighbor has Spectrum broadband and has a 70/6 connection. I am still on my old Time Warner service and I have 20/2. I somehow thought everyone would be under the same Spectrum umbrella after the merge but that isn't the case.

I have actually been pretty happy with TW service over the years. The cable card group is always able to resolve any issues quickly. The broadband support can be frustrating until you get elevated to a real technician, but those guys are generally pretty sharp as well. Getting to them isn't always easy however. I think the cost is a bit high. Our phone/internet/cable package is $188 a month but they are the only game in town so I just grin and bear it.

That's nuts man. Get an OBI box off newegg and use google voice with your broadband. My mother gets the 2 up 1 down internet plan and with her OBI talk box gets phone service too all for $15.

No kidding, Trump's guy is rolling back everything it seems. For consumers we're heading in the wrong direction.
